Grosseto between Urban History and the Maremma Landscape

Grosseto combines a historic city center with the landscapes of the Maremma. The city lies on a plain crossed by the Ombrone River, a few kilometers from the Tyrrhenian coast. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore particularly worth considering whether you want to focus on culture in the city, archaeological history, or hiking and cycling routes toward Alberese.

Culture in the Historic Center

The historic center of Grosseto is surrounded by a fully preserved and well-maintained medieval ring of walls. At its center stands the Cattedrale di San Lorenzo. Its construction began in 1294 under the Sienese architect Sozzo Rustichini, on the ruins of an earlier church dedicated to the Assumption. Its features include a baptismal font, stained-glass windows, the Cappella del Crocifisso, and a painting by Matteo di Giovanni. Five audio guides in Italian and English are available for visitors. The Polo culturale Le Clarisse is also located in the historic center. It is housed in a former 17th-century monastery and comprises four cultural institutions. The tour of the Museo Collezione Gianfranco Luzzetti includes the former Santa Chiara monastery, known as a former Poor Clares convent, and the Chiesa dei Bigi. The collection displays 64 works donated to the city of Grosseto. Clarisse Arte complements this offering with a space for temporary exhibitions, a documentation center, and a storage facility for selected works from public art collections. The Giardino Archaeologico is designed as an open-air museum and archaeological garden. Further insights into the city’s history are offered by the Sienese Keep and MuseoLab. The Sienese Keep is considered Grosseto’s most important fortress and was built during the Republic of Siena. A special tradition is the procession on the night of San Lorenzo: in the historic center, a cart pulled by Maremma cattle from Alberese leads the way, followed by mounted Butteri. Roselle, the Maremma, and Routes into the Great Outdoors

North of the city lies the Area Archeologica di Roselle, 8 kilometers from Grosseto. Sections of Etruscan walls and Roman city remains have been preserved there, including the forum, Cardo maximus, basilica, and thermal baths. The Museo Archeologico e d’Arte della Maremma has a section dedicated to Roselle. It documents the Etruscan city, which was founded at the end of the Iron Age and conquered by Rome in 294 BC. For active days, the Parco Regionale della Maremma offers a network of hiking and Nordic walking trails. The visitor center in Alberese is 4 kilometers from the SS Aurelia and is signposted from the exits. Route A9 – I valloni is a short, level walk through the Grand Dukes’ pine forest and the landscape of the Parco della Maremma known as “little Africa.” One variant leads to the Torre di Collelungo; there are also connections to the beach and toward Marina di Alberese. The surrounding area can also be explored by bicycle on a variety of routes. The Grosseto–Alberese cycle path begins at Grosseto railway station, runs along the Ombrone embankment, and enters the Parco Regionale della Maremma at Pian di Barca. It ends at the visitor center in Alberese. The cycling route to Spiaggia di Collelungo passes through the Grand Dukes’ pine forest to Marina di Alberese and then returns to Alberese along the coastal cycle path. The Alberese–San Rabano route reaches the ruins of the monastery, its church, and the Uccellina Tower, surrounded by large holm oaks. Another route follows the Strada del Mare through pine forests, wetlands, and meadows to Marina di Alberese and the mouth of the Ombrone.
