Landscape and Regional Character

Gavorrano is home to the Parco delle Colline Metallifere, which belongs to the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network as the Tuscan Mining Geopark. This gives the town a clear thematic framework that brings together landscape and mining history. The Monte Calvo is also located in the Gavorrano area and is considered a biodiversity hotspot. Mining in the Museum and on Site

Pozzo Roma is the landmark of the Gavorrano mine. The GEOMET, Museo delle Geodiversità e delle Miniere delle Colline Metallifere, provides a broader overview. Videos, information panels, artefacts and minerals explain the geology of this region of the Maremma and its mining history. The presentation spans the deposits and use of georesources in antiquity through to the closure of the mines at the end of the 20th century. You therefore encounter not just individual remnants, but a wide-ranging account of the relationship between landscape, raw materials and human use over time.

Medieval Town Centre and Archaeological Traces

The town centre of Gavorrano preserves medieval buildings and structures. These include the castle, arches, gates, walls and large buildings with towers. In addition, the Centro di documentazione Davide Manni “Castel di Pietra” displays archaeological finds from excavations at Castel di Pietra. During these excavations, preserved walls and the remains of a small tower were uncovered between 1997 and 2007. A visit can therefore be viewed on two levels: the town centre preserves visible medieval forms, while Castel di Pietra documents the archaeological results of the excavations. The Teatro delle Rocce is a cultural venue in its own right. It is located in a small, semicircular quarry carved into the rock at the foot of the large San Rocco quarry and offers 2,000 seats. The unusual combination of rocky surroundings and theatre architecture makes the venue another distinctive element of Gavorrano’s cultural profile.

Orientation and Cycling Route

The IAT tourist information office in Gavorrano provides information about local monuments and attractions, cultural events, historical and nature trails, and excursions. It can also book guided tours and individually arranged itineraries. For an active perspective, there is the Gran Tour delle Colline Metallifere: the cycling circuit is approximately 250 kilometres long and includes 4,500 metres of elevation gain. It is intended for exploring this area by bicycle.
