Suvereto between sacred art and living local history

Churches, museums and medieval traces

The Chiesa di San Giusto dates back to the period from the 9th to the 12th century. During the transition from the Diocese of Populonia to today’s Diocese of Massa Marittima, it served as a cathedral. Its facade, portal and quatrefoil rose window are classified as examples of the Tuscan Romanesque style. As a result, a single building reveals several historical periods and design features that are relevant to understanding Suvereto’s cultural heritage. The Chiesa della Madonna sopra la Porta was built in 1480 and enlarged in 1772. Inside, there is a 16th-century painting depicting the Madonna Immacolata with the Child. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo was built in 1881 by the Compagnia della Misericordia. This church houses the Museo di Arte Sacra. The museum mainly contains paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries and also displays 15th-century wooden sculptures attributed to Lorenzo di Pietro, known as il Vecchietta. Another historical landmark is the Chiostro di San Francesco. It was founded in 1286 by the Aldobrandeschi counts of Santa Fiora and has a square layout with five arcades on each side. In addition, the Museo Artistico della Bambola in Suvereto houses more than fifty dolls. The cultural spectrum therefore extends from medieval architecture and religious art to an independent collection centered on an everyday subject. The Rocca Aldobrandesca was built from the 13th century onward on the remains of earlier fortifications commissioned by the Aldobrandeschi. Its origins point to the medieval development of the town, without implying anything about its present-day accessibility or use.

Events in the historic town center

If you would like to plan your trip around specific dates, the Palio delle Botti is a notable example. It takes place twice a year in Suvereto: in May as the Palio di S. Croce and on the eve of Ferragosto as the Palio dell’Imperatore. Teams roll empty barrels with a capacity of 500 liters across the paving of the historic center. The Palio delle Botti is also part of the national barrel-racing circuit of the Associazione delle Città del Vino. From May to September, the historic town center hosts musical events, performances, historical reenactments, competitions, lectures, literary evenings, film screenings and tastings of local products. One event in Suvereto also includes a parade of allegorical floats on small vehicles as well as masked groups. On a Sunday at the end of September, the historic town center is closed to traffic and offers children and young people numerous educational and recreational workshops. For local orientation, the tourist information and visitor assistance office is located in Suvereto’s historic center at Via Magenta 2; it is operated by Parchi Val di Cornia.
