Scansano lies in the hilly hinterland of the Maremma between the coast and the slopes of Monte Amiata. The medieval historic centre is home to the 15th-century Palazzo Pretorio. The building houses the Museo Archeologico e della Vite e del Vino. Ghiaccio Forte and Etruscan Traces

Under pressure from Rome, the sanctuary was dismantled for defensive reasons and replaced by a fortification to control the routes along the Albegna. Architectural remains of the building and the fortification wall have survived and are still visible.
