Arcidosso combines medieval culture, distinctive collections and protected landscapes on Monte Amiata. Those looking for a mix of sightseeing, nature experiences and regional specialities during their trip will find a variety of options for active and more relaxed days here. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether castles and museums, paths through the landscape or the town’s culinary side should be the main focus.

Castle, Museum and Art Collections

The Rocca Aldobrandesca is one of the oldest and best-preserved medieval castles in the Amiata area. Its construction probably began around the year 860 on existing buildings dating from the Lombard period. The Museo del Paesaggio Medievale is located on the top floor of the Castello Aldobrandesco. This allows you to combine the town’s medieval history with a museum visit without separating the castle from its historical significance.

The MACO offers a completely different cultural perspective. It houses a collection of more than 5,000 objects of Asian art, handicrafts and ethnographic artefacts from the Namkhai Collection. For your daily itinerary, this creates an interesting choice between regional history and an extensive collection with a non-European focus.

Merigar can also be explored on foot when no scheduled opening days are taking place. Access to the buildings may then not be possible. If you mainly want to get to know the site and its surroundings, you can plan the visit accordingly as an outdoor exploration. If the buildings are important to you, you should take the scheduled opening days into account.

Nature on Monte Amiata

The Parco Faunistico del Monte Amiata was established in the 1990s on the initiative of the municipality of Arcidosso to protect the animal and plant species found on Monte Amiata. Along the marked paths, visitors can observe free-roaming red deer, fallow deer, roe deer, mouflon and the Apennine wolf from a distance. This makes the park a nature experience in its own right, with the landscape and its wildlife at the centre rather than a visit to a single building.

The Riserva Naturale Monte Labbro covers around 60 hectares of chestnut groves, located mainly on the northern slope of Monte Labbro. A trekking trail lasting around three hours in the park leads to the summit of Monte Labbro. From there, the view extends across the entire valley as far as Argentario. Those who enjoy spending longer periods outdoors can plan this trail as a separate part of the day; those who prefer a more relaxed pace can focus on the protected chestnut groves and the marked paths in the wildlife park.

Regional Chestnut Culture

Arcidosso lies in the production area of the Castagna del Monte Amiata IGP. This chestnut has a mild, sweet flavour. Alongside the castle, museum and nature, it adds a regional culinary dimension to the trip. If local products are important to you, you can take this aspect into account when choosing your accommodation and planning your days, just as you would the cultural and scenic attractions.

If you would like to extend your search beyond Arcidosso, you can also take a look at Montelaterone and Stribugliano. This keeps your options open without losing sight of the different focuses on culture, nature and regional flavours.
