Discover Montevitozzo: History, Memorial Park and Trails
Montevitozzo at High Altitude
Montevitozzo lies at 668 metres above sea level, making it the highest-altitude frazione in the municipality of Sorano. This elevation shapes the character of the village and makes it a destination where history and trails through the landscape are directly connected.Castle, Villa and Strategic Summit
Above Montevitozzo, the mountain summit occupies a strategic position and offers control over an extensive area. The remains of a castle are located on the summit and are said to have been part of the Aldobrandeschi fief. This cautious wording is part of the tradition surrounding the site and should be retained when placing it in its historical context. After the castle fell into ruin, the Orsini had a fortified villa built farther down the slope in the 16th century. Montevitozzo therefore tells the story of several historical layers: the castle on the summit, its traditional association with the Aldobrandeschi, and a later fortified Orsini complex. Those interested in medieval systems of rule and the development of small settlements will find here not an interchangeable backdrop, but a clearly identifiable sequence of castle and villa.Church and Culture of Remembrance
The Church of the Immaculate Conception is located in Montevitozzo. The Parco della Rimembranza di Montevitozzo provides another distinctive feature. The memorial park commemorates those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It preserves 37 small memorial stones arranged in four rows. This specific arrangement distinguishes the park from a memorial site described only in general terms and gives this place of remembrance a clearly recognisable form. The festival calendar is also part of the local identity. The patronal feast in honour of Saint James the Apostle is listed for 25 July. On 5 January, there is also the traditional custom of the āBefaniā. Singing, eating and drinking take place, while contributions are also collected for lunch on the following day. These two dates show different sides of local life: the religious patronal feast and a community custom associated with the beginning of the year.Trails to a Spring, Lake and Rock Formation
Trails from Montevitozzo lead to several different landscape destinations. The route from Montevitozzo reaches Fonte Grande, a natural spring. A trail from Montevitozzo also reaches a small lake. Another trail leads to the rock formation La Rocaccia. This allows different interests to be combined when choosing the location: Fonte Grande represents a natural spring, the small lake another landscape destination, and La Rocaccia a striking rock formation. Each destination is named independently and provides you with specific points of reference when you want to explore trails and the landscape around Montevitozzo. Other destinations in Tuscany that you can also discover include Potassa, Salaiola, Pancole, Montorgiali, Manciano, Roccastrada, Civitella-Paganico and Follonica. For the higher-level travel overview: Grosseto.
