Beach and Nature Reserve

One defining landscape area is the Tomboli di Follonica Biogenetic Nature Reserve. Parts of the nature reserve lie within Follonica’s built-up urban area and include the coastal pinewoods of Pineta di Ponente and Pineta di Levante. As a result, protected coastal nature is an immediate part of the townscape. The area is freely accessible on foot; the exception is a fenced-off protected area near the district of Puntone di Scarlino. When visiting, you should treat this boundary as an established part of your orientation.

For active exploration, a cycle path runs through the nature reserve along the Colacchia provincial road, from Follonica to Puntone di Scarlino. The route therefore connects two clearly named reference points and also makes the area interesting for a bike tour, without allowing any specific travel time or level of difficulty to be inferred. Designated entrances with wooden walkways lead to the beach within the nature reserve while protecting the sensitive coastal dunes. You can therefore reach the beach via designated access points, while the dunes remain preserved as a landscape area worthy of protection.

The beach at Pratoranieri offers another specific connection to the coast: it can be reached on foot or by bicycle via a waterfront route designed for pedestrians and a cycle path. This gives you different ways to explore the coast – access via the waterfront route to Pratoranieri and the paths through the protected coastal area.

Green Spaces in the Urban Area

The town also has independent destinations for quieter breaks or a change of pace between visits. Parco Centrale is a ten-hectare green space located directly beside Follonica’s town centre. Parco Pineta di Levante, by contrast, is a pinewood used as a playground. Parco Pineta di Ponente has ramps providing access for people with disabilities.

Culture in the Former Factory Village

Teatro Fonderia Leopolda is located in the former factory village of Ex Ilva in Follonica. The site’s historical context is part of its specific character and should not be confused with a modern new-build setting. The theatre hosts theatre and music seasons featuring professional ensembles. If you do not want to plan your stay exclusively around beaches and nature, this venue offers a clearly cultural addition.

Follos 1838 is a separate event in the town’s events calendar. This historical event takes place annually in Follonica and is a regular fixture in the town’s events calendar.

Visiting and Orientation

The cultural offering also includes the MAGMA Museum. It is accessible via a ramp and an internal lift.
