Marine Habitats at the Mondo Marino Aquarium

The Mondo Marino Aquarium is a centre for marine environmental education and the headquarters of the SHARKS StUDIES CENTRE. Its 37 tanks display Mediterranean, tropical and Atlantic species. In total, you can discover more than 150 animal and plant species there. The aquarium thus presents several different marine environments in one place and places a clear emphasis on engaging with the marine environment. For travel planning, this diversity is particularly tangible: you do not just see a single group of species, but encounter different habitats and the range from Mediterranean to Atlantic species. The aquarium is therefore an independent cultural and natural-history attraction in Valpiana.

Ironworking as Visible Local History

From the 15th to the 18th century, Valpiana was an advanced centre of ironworking. The production facilities are still visible in the town centre. History here is therefore not limited to a year or a single display, but is evident in the preserved facilities within the town. The Gora delle Ferriere is part of the technical side of this development. It was an artificial canal that powered the ironworking facilities with water power. If you are interested in regional industrial history, this example illustrates how earlier processing was connected with the use of water. Another independent attraction is Explora Dinosauri. It displays 20 life-like, life-sized representations of dinosaurs and prehistoric fish. Together with the aquarium, this creates an unusual thematic contrast: on the one hand, there are present-day marine habitats, while on the other, there are representations of animals that disappeared long ago.

Walk to Valpiana and Return by Bus

The hiking route from Lago dell’Accesa can be extended for over 4.5 km to Valpiana. For planning a trip with different interests, the return journey is also relevant: buses run from Valpiana back to Massa Marittima on the Follonica–Montieri route operated by Toscana Mobilità. This allows you to combine the documented trail with a return journey by bus, without having to retrace the route in the same way.

Local Tradition in the 2024 Events Calendar

Local food culture and social life are also part of the documented picture of Valpiana. As part of Estate Valpianese 2024, the Sagra del Tortello Maremmano took place from 8 to 18 August, organised by the Associazione La Quercia di Valpiana. Estate Valpianese 2024 itself was held from 25 July to 25 August at the Centro Sociale in Valpiana and included typical Maremma menus, performances and dance evenings.
