Montieri: Geopark, Culture and Chestnut Tradition

Montieri combines landscapes, mining history, churches and regional chestnut products into a distinctive destination in Tuscany. The town is located in the Geoparco delle Colline Metallifere, the Tuscan Mining Geopark. If you would like to combine culture, nature and active days during your trip, you will find a variety of experiences here, with each excursion offering its own character.

Landscapes and trails in the mining park

The entire municipal area of Montieri is marked with CAI hiking trails. A thematic addition is “I sentieri dell’argento di Montieri”, a route in the Tuscan Mining Geopark. To reach a viewpoint, you can take either a paved road or a trekking trail to Poggio di Montieri. From there, the view extends from Monte Amiata to Corsica. Le Roste also represents the area’s distinctive landscape: The geosite consists of the red gorges of the Merse near the bridge connecting Montieri with Boccheggiano. An important point for planning your excursion is the clear access restriction: Access to Le Roste is prohibited. The site may only be visited as part of a guided tour organized jointly by the Comune di Montieri and the Parco delle Colline Metallifere. The natural small lake Laghetto di Montieri is also located in the area around Montieri. It is one of the few wetlands in the mining region and is home to one of the last currently confirmed Tuscan sites of the rare aquatic plant Hottonia palustris. The nature experience therefore ranges from expansive viewpoints to a remarkable small wetland.

Churches, archaeology and Boccheggiano

The archaeological site of Canonica di San Niccolò preserves the remains of a church with a unique, six-petaled flower-shaped floor plan. In Montieri itself, you will also find the Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo, a late Romanesque church built in the 13th century, with a broad nave and a small semicircular apse. In the immediate surroundings is Boccheggiano Boccheggiano. The Chiesa di San Sebastiano from the 14th century stands there. Inside is a marble sculpture of Saint Sebastian from 1650 by Bartolomeo Cennini; the coat of arms of the Salimbeni family is also preserved on the travertine portal. This provides several different points of interest for cultural planning: archaeological remains, medieval sacred architecture and individual artworks with a precisely documented historical context.

Activities, seasonal events and regional products

Guided horseback rides are offered in the Montieri area. Beginners can also book introductory courses in handling horses. The range of activities and excursions also includes a bike park. During the summer months, you can book guided hikes or adventure activities at the Ufficio Turistico on Piazza Gramsci in Montieri. The regional cuisine can be explored through chestnuts. In the municipality, you can buy products made from chestnut flour as well as sample chestnut sweets and Schiacce directly from the bakeries that produce them. Montieri’s chestnut product is celebrated at the Sagra della Castagna in October and December. Separately, the Madonna dei Castagni is celebrated in Montieri every three years during the second week of September. For further local research, you can also look at Gerfalco Gerfalco and Travale Travale, in addition to Boccheggiano. Montieri can be reached by car via the E80 to Follonica Est and then via the SR439. Those traveling by train can go as far as Follonica station and then continue to Montieri by car or bus. These two options provide a concrete basis when coordinating your accommodation and daily mobility during your stay.
