Sorano amid Tuff, Paths and Defensive Architecture
Sorano is a destination for you if you do not want to experience culture and landscape separately. The town lies on a rocky cliff and is embedded in tuff. Rock settlements and paths cut into the tuff have been used here since Etruscan times. As a result, you encounter history and landscape not only in individual sights, but also in the form of the town and its surroundings.
A striking testimony to the town’s history is the Fortezza Orsini, an example of Renaissance military architecture. Development under the Aldobrandeschi family also shaped the historic appearance: Sorano became a fortified defensive village with bastions, and the Aldobrandeschi made the town one of the most powerful fiefdoms in southern Tuscany for more than four centuries. The Chiesa della Collegiata di San Nicola is also located in the centre. A travertine baptismal font from 1563 can be found there.

There are also specific destinations for active days. The rock settlement of San Rocco includes numerous areas carved into the tuff, including tombs, dovecotes and rock dwellings. From San Rocco, a Via Cava leads into the valley of the Lente River and offers an impressive view of Sorano. Here, the term Via Cava refers to a path cut into the rock and combines the experience of the landscape with the town’s historical character.
Another option is the hiking trail connecting the rock settlement of Vitozza with Sorano. It has been cleared and reopened and is considered a route of great natural and historical interest for residents, hikers and visitors. This allows you to choose between a short, self-guided tour and longer paths without losing sight of the cultural dimension of the landscape.
Local Festivals and Traditional Atmosphere
The annual calendar includes events focusing on local products, music and traditional customs. On 30 December, a large fire is lit in Piazza Busatti in Sorano at nightfall. Traditional songs accompany the renewal of an old tradition of peasant culture.
The Festa delle cantine combines tastings of local products with folk music. The Festa del tufo e della birra is a four-day summer event featuring music, local cuisine and beer. These festivals add their own accents alongside the historic paths and buildings: Sorano presents itself not only as a place of tuff architecture, but also as a setting for regional culinary and festival culture.
