Castel del Piano – History, Landscape and Routes

Castel del Piano combines a historic centre with a distinctive high-plateau landscape and named routes on Monte Amiata. If you would like to combine culture, nature, regional products and different daily rhythms in Tuscany, you will find several clearly distinguishable points of interest here: narrow cobbled streets, sacred art, ancient town gates, forests, vineyards and paths that begin directly in the town.

Historic Centre with Churches and Palaces

The historic centre preserves narrow cobbled streets, stone houses, loggias and small squares. The first official mention appears in documents from the Abbey of Monte Amiata dating from 890, at that time under the name “Casale Plana”. This early form of the name is one of the town’s historical points of reference.

Among the significant religious buildings is the Chiesa della NativitĂ  di Maria. It was built between the 17th and 19th centuries and has a Latin-cross floor plan. Inside, it preserves works by Giuseppe Nicola Nasini as well as a historic 18th-century organ. The medieval single-nave Chiesa del Santissimo Sacramento, also known as Chiesa Piccina, is associated with works by Francesco Nasini.

The Chiesa di San Leonardo dates back to the 12th century and was restored in 1915 in the Neo-Gothic style. The Chiesa di San Leonardo preserves frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries as well as Renaissance details, including trachyte surrounds. The Chiesa della SS. Madonna delle Grazie contains a 15th-century Madonna attributed to the Sienese painter Sano di Pietro.

The Palazzo Nerucci is also part of Castel del Piano’s cultural profile. The 16th-century building houses an art collection that includes the Vegni collection, donated in 1883. Along the historic walls are the Porta dell’Orologio with its clock and bell, and the Porta Pianese, also known as Porta Amiata or Porta Castiglionese.

Palio, Landscape and Trails

A special date in the annual calendar is the Palio delle Contrade di Castel del Piano. It takes place every year on 8 September and is preceded by a historical procession. In this way, the town’s history takes on a recurring public form alongside its buildings.

Castel del Piano lies on the edge of a high plateau. Uphill are chestnut and beech forests; downhill are olive groves, vineyards and fruit trees. The Prati delle Macinaie and the Prati della Contessa are located within the municipal area at an altitude of approximately 1,300 to 1,400 metres.

Two named routes are relevant for hiking and active days. The 27-kilometre “Trekking dell’anello del Monte Amiata” hiking route can be started directly in Castel del Piano. The “La salita delle Macinaie sul Monte Amiata” route also begins here; it is also called “Salita di Castel del Piano”. Both details make the town a specific starting point for these described routes, without requiring any additional route characteristics.

Getting There and Regional Products

Castel del Piano can be reached by car or coach from Grosseto. The “Strada del Vino Montecucco e dai sapori dell’Amiata”, a visitor route for discovering typical local products, also passes through the town. This allows you to combine the town’s history, landscape and regional food culture in a single stay when planning your trip.
