Campagnatico: History, Landscape and Cycling

Campagnatico combines medieval local history with a varied landscape along the Ombrone. Situated on a hilltop, the village slopes steeply eastward towards the Ombrone Valley.

Medieval Historic Centre and Living Traditions

The fortified complex of Rocca Aldobrandesca has been preserved in the village. The Pieve Vecchia was built around the year 1000 and uses the cistern of a Roman villa as its foundation. This means that two very different historical layers stand side by side in Campagnatico: the medieval fortification and a sacred building whose foundations point back to the Roman past. The surroundings therefore cannot be reduced to a single type of landscape: cultivated slopes meet wooded areas and the village’s distinctive hilltop setting. The Oasi Faunistica di Monte Leoni is part of this natural diversity. Evergreen trees and shrubs, cork-oak forests, chestnut forests and dense undergrowth grow there. The animals found there include, among others, wildcats and spectacled salamanders.
