Arcille: Church, River Landscape and Fossils
Arcille combines the history of a small land-reform settlement with trails along the water, a distinctive village church and paleontological features.
Church and origins of the settlement
Arcille was established as a small settlement as part of the land reform carried out by Ente Maremma. In this context, various facilities were provided for the population, including the church and the rectory. The religious history of the settlement can be dated precisely: the parish of Madonna di Lourdes was canonically established by episcopal decree on January 1, 1955, and the Church of Madonna di Lourdes was solemnly consecrated on March 23, 1958. Architecturally, it is a single-nave building in the Neo-Romanesque style. Three windows on each side and a total of six arches define the described design. The church thus provides a tangible insight into the more recent history of the settlement, which is closely linked to Arcille's development as a center of land reform.Hiking, cycling and trails along the water
Several routes with different characteristics are available for active days. The Arcille–Trasubbie–Ombrone circular route runs through the wild valley of the Torrente Trasubbie to its confluence with the Ombrone River. The route then follows the Ombrone back to Arcille. It therefore connects two clearly named landscape areas while remaining a circular route centered on the settlement. A specific tour is also documented for cycling. On the Arcille–Baccinello cycling tour, the first, easier loop of approximately 25 km can be ridden. A shorter option is the approximately 8 km Fitwalking route from Piazza di Arcille via Strada delle Cantinelle and back. The two figures differ not only in terms of the means of transport, but also in their approximate length and respective route. On the water, the approximately 8.5 km Arcille–Istia d’Ombrone section begins at the landing stage in the hamlet of “Le Cantinelle” near Arcille. The navigation section presents no particular difficulties and is considered suitable for everyone; individual passages reach at most whitewater grade II. At the tenth edition of Vivifiume Ombrone, kayaking, rafting, trekking, speed walking and mountain biking were on the program in Arcille. These documented activities show the different character of the trails and river area, without implying a current event date.Fossils from the sands of Arcille
Arcille also has a distinctive paleontological dimension. The first fossil evidence in the Mediterranean basin of a member of the Monodontidae family, which includes whales from the order Cetacea and the suborder Odontoceti, comes from the Pliocene sands of the settlement. In addition, a Lower Pliocene elasmobranch assemblage of paleoecological and paleoenvironmental significance has been documented for Arcille. The finds include Casatia thermophila. Casatia thermophila is considered the only fossil monodontid species found in Mediterranean deposits. Those interested in geological history and the development of early marine landscapes therefore gain an unusually specific thematic insight into Arcille.A tradition centered on porcini mushrooms
The Sagra del Porcino is part of the local festival culture. The traditional event reached its 44th edition and places porcini mushrooms at the center. Together with the settlement's history, the river routes and the fossil finds, this creates a multifaceted picture of Arcille between village culture, landscape and regional culinary tradition. To the main travel overview: Campagnatico.
