Rocchette combines an impressive history with a landscape best explored on foot and with time for individual discoveries. Rocchette di Fazio is situated on a rocky spur above the Albegna River and was considered an important fortress because of its strategically defensible position. The settlement was first mentioned in 1216 under the name Rocchetta as a “castrum”. The stone houses stand on the ridge of high limestone cliffs and give the destination its distinctive character.

Fortification Walls, the Rocca and Santa Cristina

The defensive walls of Rocchette di Fazio were built by the Aldobrandeschi in the 13th century to protect the old Aldobrandeschi castle. The circuit of walls is hexagonal and has two round-arched entrances. One of them is called Porta del Castello. Five towers are still preserved along the walls; the highest forms part of the Rocca Aldobrandesca. The castle complex was completely rebuilt by Siena in the 15th century.

From the Rocca Aldobrandesca, on a clear day, the view stretches from Monte Amiata to Argentario. Alongside its architectural history, the exceptional location above the Albegna is therefore also a focal point of a visit. Those who enjoy discovering historical details directly in the architecture should also take note of the Pieve di Santa Cristina: a Templar cross is visible above its portal, while a rose window is located in the upper part of the façade. The church of Santa Cristina contains frescoes dating from 1400.

Local tradition is also part of Rocchette’s cultural character. Every year in April, a folk tradition of improvised singing competitions associated with the poet Tribuno Tonini is renewed. April therefore adds a distinctive element for travellers who would like to discover lively regional customs alongside walls, towers and churches.

Hiking Trails with Different Profiles

Several clearly described options are available for planning your day. The Sentiero del Parco is a moderately difficult walking trail 3 kilometres long with around 200 metres of elevation gain. The Bellafreddi Trail begins in Rocchette di Fazio and passes a fountain restored by Leopold of Lorraine in the 18th century. This moderately difficult circular trail is approximately 3 kilometres long and has 270 metres of elevation gain.

The Bellafreddi Trail also combines nature and history with a preserved section of the old road paving of the Strada del Sale. It is marked in red. From Pozzo Diavolo, you can follow the Albegna to reach the access point to the Sentiero del Parco and thus create a longer circular route. The two trails therefore offer different considerations for your planning: with its stated length and elevation gain, the Sentiero del Parco remains manageable, while the Bellafreddi Trail additionally incorporates historic traces of the road and a possible extension.

Rocchette can also be included in a cycling itinerary. A 40-kilometre route for gravel and MTB bikes reaches Rocchette di Fazio after an ascent of approximately 3 kilometres. If you are looking for accommodation, you can therefore consider whether the focus of your trip should be the fortress history, the views, walking trails or a sporty cycling tour. This allows you to shape your stay at your own pace between culture and active days, without mixing the different experiences.
