Cinigiano: Wine Routes, Village Culture and Nature

Cinigiano combines protected nature, medieval village history and Tuscan wine and farming traditions. Around the town, Mediterranean scrub, forests, pastures, vineyards, olive groves and centuries-old chestnut trees alternate. This gives you different ways to discover Cinigiano: on a walk, through the history of the town or by encountering regional products.

Trails through nature and the village

Seven trails can be walked in the Poggio all'Olmo Nature Reserve. A second, more town-focused option is the Itinerario dei panorami. It begins in Cinigiano and leads via the new viewing terrace in the oldest part of the village. This places two clearly distinct forms of walking side by side: trails in the nature reserve and a circular route that starts directly in the town. The Giardino Laudato Sì at the Monastero di Siloe is also one of the documented walking routes in the surrounding area. There is a 4 km-long path with four stations for spiritual reflection. The route is therefore described not only as a path through a landscape, but is also thematically structured by its four stations.

Village history and regional culture

The clock tower of Cinigiano stands in Piazza Marconi, in the centre of the medieval village. By contrast, only a few remains of the medieval castle around which Cinigiano developed have survived. Together, these two points of reference reveal a local history that can be understood both through a preserved building and through the traces of an earlier complex. The Santuario della Madonna di Val di Prata is located in nearby Monticello Amiata. Access is from the Parco della Rimembranza on the edge of the village. This adds a religious site with a precisely described approach to the cultural points of interest around Cinigiano.

Wine, farms and the Festa dell'Uva

The Montecucco Wine and Flavour Trail passes through Cinigiano and connects farms and wineries. There, you can taste wines, oils and other agricultural products. Wine is therefore not limited to a single product, but together with olive oil and other agricultural products represents the town's regional character. The Festa dell'Uva takes place in Cinigiano every year in autumn, between the end of September and the beginning of October. During the weekend of the Festa dell'Uva, visitors can watch a parade with floats symbolising Cinigiano's three districts and visit surrounding wineries to discover and taste the region's typical wines.

Other seasonal traditions

The Befanate are celebrated in the Maremma on the night of 5–6 January. People dress up as Befana, walk through the town singing and entertain families in exchange for a glass of wine and sweets.
