Sasso Dʼombrone

Between Castle, River and Historic Paths

Sasso Dʼombrone combines a distinctive history with paths through the Ombrone river landscape. The village lies near the boundary with the municipality of Civitella Paganico, formed by this river. Its character is especially evident around the small castle: its Rocca was built to control the Ombrone Valley, and the castle also controlled the historic Traversa dei Monti, which connected the Grosseto area with Montalcino.

History That Lives on in the Villagescape

The location along an important route and by the river shaped the village’s historical significance. Sasso d'Ombrone guarded the bridge over the Ombrone as early as before the year 1000. The village was also an ancient Grancia of Siena’s Santa Maria della Scala Hospital. The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo contains a 15th-century crucifix of Sienese origin. The Santuario della Madonna del Soccorso was built in the 16th century and completely rebuilt in 1872.

Walks with Views of the Valley and Hills

A panoramic promenade around the castle in the upper historic part of Sasso d'Ombrone offers views of the hills of Montalcino and the Val d'Orcia. The view also extends across the Ombrone Valley towards Paganico. For a route by the water, the Sentiero del Fiume is available. It is entirely a walking trail and leads close to the Ombrone River. The route includes an educational section where you can discover the local flora and fauna.

The Sentiero del Fiume also includes a picnic area near the Ombrone, from which you can descend to the river. The uphill educational trail La via del fiume is equipped with signs explaining the flora along the route. These include oak trees, broom and hawthorn. This allows the walk to be combined not only with the river landscape but also with the plants along the path. The completely preserved Antiche Fonti del Sasso lie along the route from Sasso d'Ombrone to the Ombrone, the Sentiero del Fiume.

Forests, Olive Groves and Vineyards

The Sentiero del Monastero offers a different route. It connects Sasso d'Ombrone with the Monastero di Siloe and passes through forests, olive groves and vineyards. In addition to the riverside route, this gives you landscape views that reflect the rural character of the surrounding area.

Village Life and Local Specialties

The Parco Comunale di Bellacosta is located at the entrance to Sasso d'Ombrone when you come from the bridge. The Sagra del Capitone takes place between the historic center and Parco Bellacosta. Capitone, eel cooked in various ways, is considered a typical dish of Sasso d'Ombrone. For sports activities, the Campetto Polifunzionale offers tennis and five-a-side football; use requires a prior request to the local association that manages it. Albus Alpacas also offers interactive visits, but only by prior reservation.
