Monticello Amiata: Medieval History, Casa Museo and Chestnut Trails

Monticello Amiata is located at an altitude of 734 metres on the road to Monte Amiata and near the Poggio all'Olmo regional nature reserve. Anyone wishing to combine culture, landscapes and a vivid sense of local history in Tuscany will find a place here with medieval fortifications, historic religious buildings, chestnut trails and a museum dedicated to everyday life in the Amiata area.

Medieval Traces in the Village

The medieval fortifications of Monticello Amiata are almost completely preserved. They include the historic entrance gates Porta Monticelli and Porta San Francesco. Beneath the main square is a significant old cistern, while the Church of San Michele Arcangelo in the centre documents an important part of the village's history. It was rebuilt in the mid-13th century and extensively remodelled in the Neoclassical style between 1815 and 1832. San Michele Arcangelo also offers a specific point of interest for art history: the church houses a panel painting by Bartolomeo Neroni, known as Il Riccio, created between 1535 and 1540. Outside the village stands the 15th-century Oratorio della Compagnia di San Sebastiano. It preserves a painting by Manetti and a wooden statue of Saint Sebastian. The Santuario della Madonna di Val di Prata is also located in the vicinity of Monticello Amiata. It can be accessed from the Parco della Rimembranza outside the village and has been documented since 1198.

Casa Museo and Trails Through the Chestnut Landscape

The Casa Museo focuses on domestic everyday life and work in a high-altitude hill village at the end of the 19th century. With authentic furniture and household objects, it reconstructs a mountain farmstead in the Amiata area from the late 19th century. The complex includes a stable, a storeroom and an old animal-powered olive mill. The Casa Museo offers guided museum tours. Several different trails are the focus of walks and themed excursions. The Sentiero Ontanelli leads through the chestnut grove of the Ontanelli estate, where the monumental “Castagnone” tree can be seen. The surroundings of Monticello Amiata are also explored by the Via della Castagna, a themed hiking and excursion route through centuries-old chestnut groves. The Via delle Fonti connects two springs in the village. The Birimacola route continues towards Monticello. The different forms of access are important when planning individual visits: the two educational trails, Via delle Fonti and Via della Castagna, can be visited by prior arrangement. The visitor centre of the Poggio all'Olmo nature reserve is located in Monticello Amiata, Località Prato Laforma. The reserve itself lies immediately south of the village.

Chestnut Festival in Early October

The Festa della Castagna takes place in Monticello Amiata every year around the beginning of October. At the festival, chestnut jam, roasted chestnuts and sweet polenta were prepared or offered. This gives the village's connection with chestnuts a festive and culinary dimension in addition to the trails and the Ontanelli estate.
