Livorno – Culture, Canals and Waterfront Promenade

Livorno combines urban culture with a distinctive waterfront landscape. The waterfront area is characterised by bridges, canals and old palaces reflected in the calm water. On the western edge of Piazzale Mascagni lies Terrazza Mascagni, one of the most significant settings along Livorno’s urban waterfront promenade. The Acquario di Livorno is located directly beside it. Its 32 tanks display more than 1,700 animals from 300 different species – a clearly defined experience for a stay that combines culture and maritime themes.

Art, Theatre and Urban History

A focus of any visit to the city is its museums and historic buildings. The Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori, housed in Villa Mimbelli, primarily displays paintings from the mid-19th century to the 1940s, including significant groups of works by artists from Livorno. The villa was commissioned by Francesco Mimbelli and inaugurated in 1868; many of its original frescoes and decorations have been preserved. The visit therefore combines a specific art museum with the character of a historic building. The Teatro Carlo Goldoni also holds a special position: it is the only large city theatre in Livorno to have survived the bombings of the Second World War. Fortezza Vecchia has a medieval core around which Livorno’s urban fabric developed. Today it serves as a venue for numerous events in the fields of art, music and film. The old walls of Fortezza Nuova also host numerous events every year, including art exhibitions, concerts and performances. At the same time, Fortezza Nuova is a public park completely surrounded by the sea. From there, panoramic views extend over the canals of the Venezia and Pontino districts as well as the adjacent Piazza della Repubblica.

Natural History, Cycle Route and Regional Cuisine

The Museo di Storia Naturale del Mediterraneo expands the cultural offering with natural science topics. Its central complex houses five exhibition areas and a planetarium. Overall, the museum is dedicated to the natural sciences across approximately 6,000 m²; the complex includes, among other things, a botanical garden, a historic park, a Specola, collection storage facilities, and research and training laboratories. The outdoor area includes a section for aromatic plants and an ethnobotanical garden with old fruit varieties. Cacciucco represents the culinary side of the city, a culinary tradition with a distinctive character. It emerged from a complex and diverse combination of different forms of knowledge, flavours and identities.
