Collesalvetti between History and Landscape

Collesalvetti combines impressive reminders of the past with trails through the landscape of the Monti Livornesi. Particularly characteristic is the Acquedotto Leopoldino: construction began in 1793 and was completed in 1868. Its route leads from Colognole in Collesalvetti to Livorno via the Via delle Sorgenti and was originally designed as a walkable “aqueduct promenade”.

Trails by the Springs and in the Parco dei Monti Livornesi

In the southwest of the municipal area lies the protected Sorgenti di Colognole area, just outside the village of Colognole. The walking trail at the springs of the Acquedotto di Colognole is 5.9 kilometres long and follows CAI trails 199, 125, 125P and 119. Those who want to combine culture and activity when choosing a destination will find a clearly described route here, with springs, aqueduct and protected surroundings forming distinct areas of experience. The broader landscape setting is the Parco dei Monti Livornesi. The protected area covers 1,300 hectares in the municipalities of Livorno, Collesalvetti and Rosignano Marittimo. Collesalvetti also offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and horse riding. The range therefore extends from a walk by the springs to various ways of actively exploring the landscape, without reducing the town to a single excursion destination.

Eremo della Sambuca and Roman Heritage

A 9.2-kilometre hiking trail via CAI trails 100 and 100B leads to the Eremo della Sambuca. The oldest part of the hermitage dates from 1100. At the same time, the complex is a protected national monument whose interior cannot be visited. This distinction is important when planning: the trail and the historic exterior are part of the experience, while an interior visit is not provided for. Collesalvetti’s Roman past is also still present. The Mansio di Torretta Vecchia lies on the Via Aemilia Scauri and was in operation at least until the middle of the 6th century AD. The well-organised complex covers an area of more than 600 square metres. The Villa Medicea di Collesalvetti represents another historical connection: it was acquired by Lorenzo and Giuliano de’ Medici in 1476. The villa is currently a private residence and cannot be visited. For those interested in art, the Pinacoteca Comunale Carlo Servolini, founded in 2007, adds to the town’s cultural profile.
