An ancient village with a musical character

Sant'Ilario is known as the “Paese della Musica” and was the birthplace of operetta composer Giuseppe Pietri. Music is therefore not merely part of a possible event held locally, but is connected with the village's identity. Piazza della Chiesa is a historic concert venue of the Elba Isola Musicale d'Europa festival. For visitors interested in culture, this square is therefore both a place of village history and a setting for musical life. The architectural development also tells a story of the past. Sant'Ilario probably originated in the 7th century with a small number of modest residential buildings. Later, the village developed through successive rings of houses protected by new access gates. This sequence makes the historical structure more concrete without reducing Sant'Ilario to a single building: the place can be understood as a village that grew through several stages of development. Piazza della Chiesa lies within the ancient Pisan fortress. From there, it offers views over the Gulf of Marina di Campo; on clear days, the view extends as far as the island of Montecristo. This means that the square combines Sant'Ilario's historical context with a far-reaching landscape vista. Hiking and gravel riding around Sant'Ilario

The Sentiero Elba n. 119 begins in Sant'Ilario and ends at the GTE junction. Its landscape character is shaped by reforested woodland and Mediterranean maquis dominated by Calicotome spinosa and Cistus monspeliensis. A hike therefore offers not only a defined starting point in the village, but also a succession of different vegetation zones along the trail. The “Elba: Paesi Campesi Gravel” gravel and MTB tour offers a different perspective. It runs from Marina di Campo beach to the hill villages of San Piero and Sant'Ilario. On leaving Sant'Ilario, the tour follows the gravel section on Via del Salicastro. This section is marked with the signposts for routes 119, 121 and GTE of the Parco Nazionale dell’Arcipelago Toscano. The hiking trail, gravel section and village routes therefore provide three different starting points for planning active days, without constituting the same range of trails.
