Suvereto among walls, churches and a castle complex

Suvereto combines the character of a medieval village with a remarkably rich cultural history. The village is still surrounded by walls today. The medieval castle complex includes the Rocca Aldobrandesca, which stands at its highest point on the northern side. Those interested in historic places will therefore find not only individual buildings here, but also a clearly recognizable medieval townscape.

Sacred art and distinctive museums

The Church of San Giusto has origins dating back to the 9th to 12th centuries. During the transition from the former bishopric of Populonia to the present-day bishopric of Massa Marittima, it played this ecclesiastical role. Another focal point is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, which houses the Museum of Sacred Art of Suvereto. This museum preserves wooden sculptures from the 15th century. They depict the announcing angel and the Annunciation of Mary and were created by Lorenzo di Pietro, known as Vecchietta. The cloister of San Francesco has also been largely preserved in its entirety. Its square layout comprises five arcades on each side. An unusual addition is the Museo Artistico della Bambola in Suvereto. It preserves more than fifty dolls, thereby adding a distinctive feature to the town’s cultural offerings.

Trails, mills and landscape

Different types of trails are available for a more active day. Sentiero 1 leads from Suvereto via Prata and back to Suvereto. The route is 8.2 kilometers long, takes around two and a half hours and has a medium difficulty level. Sentiero 17, the Sentiero dei Vecchi Molini, is instead an easy 3.7-kilometer trail through the Valle dei Vecchi Molini. It passes six former water-powered mills. The two trails therefore differ in length, difficulty and historical theme. The Torrente Redigaffi is also part of the landscape. It continues to carry a moderate amount of water even in summer; freshwater fish and freshwater crayfish can be seen in its waters. The Parco Naturale di Montioni is connected with the municipalities of Suvereto, Campiglia Marittima, Piombino, Massa Marittima and Follonica. In the wider regional area, the Poggio Saracino route begins at Montioni Nuovo. It passes visible buildings from the Napoleonic period as well as relics of aluminum mining.

Events and orientation on site

During the Medieval Evenings in Suvereto, the streets are illuminated with torches and candles. Performers wear historical costumes, and a nighttime historical reenactment commemorates the granting of the Charta Libertatis in 1201. The Sagra di Suvereto takes place every year between the end of November and the beginning of December and has been held for more than forty years. For orientation, the tourist information office is located in the historic center at Via Magenta 2. It is operated by Parchi Val di Cornia.
