Zanca: Coastal Paths, Circular Walks and Preserved Village Structure

Zanca combines a preserved village structure with paths that explore the coast, forest and landscape around Sant’Andrea. Hiking between La Zanca, Marciana and Capo Sant’Andrea

An important route for orientation is Sentiero no. 113. It connects La Zanca with the turn-off to Sentiero no. 103 near Marciana. The path can be used to access two circular walks. This makes it possible to experience the surrounding area not only from a single viewpoint, but also via different routes. Another connection is provided by the hike “Quattro passi tra mari e monti” – Itinerario no. 1. It leads from Capo Sant’Andrea up to La Zanca along an old mule track. Sentiero no. 13 begins in the La Zanca district and leads in about 30 minutes to a forest with centuries-old chestnut trees and other tall-growing trees. For an alternative route, the “Archeo Trek” – Itinerario no. 3 follows Sentiero no. 13 to the provincial road near La Zanca and then follows an old mule track back to Capo Sant’Andrea.

Coast, beaches and distinctive rocks

Sentiero no. 150 runs along the entire coast to Marciana Marina and connects the beaches in the area. This provides a distinctly coastal route in addition to the paths through the hinterland. In the surrounding area, another footpath leads to the small beach of Cotoncello. The granite cliff “le Cote Piane” can also be reached in the area via a granite path built from the beach. For experienced divers, dives near the rocks “Formiche della Zanca”, which protrude halfway out of the water, are of interest. These lie west of Sant’Andrea. The dive site complements the hiking and beach options with a clearly defined water experience and is expressly intended for experienced divers.

Village character and traditional elements

In the western part of Zanca, many buildings have retained their old structure and traditional use. The village character also includes traditional architectural and landscape elements: walls along the roadside as well as small stables that still stand flush with the road. An old chapel has been preserved as part of these traditional architectural and landscape values. Seasonal connection within the municipality

Within the municipality, the seasonal Marebus route operates from June to the end of August between Sant’Andrea, La Zanca, Patresi and Colle d’Orano. It is coordinated with the scheduled bus services.
