San Vincenzo Between Coastal Landscapes and History

San Vincenzo combines a distinctive coastal landscape with short cultural routes through the town. At its heart is the Parco Costiero di Rimigliano: the 650-hectare coastal area brings together Mediterranean vegetation, dunes, golden sand and forests characterized by holm oaks and pine trees. This allows you to experience different landscapes in one place—from the open beach to the shadier forest.

Coast and Trails in the Parco Costiero di Rimigliano

The macchia area of the park facing the sea can be reached via numerous pedestrian entrances. Paths with picnic areas lead through this area, allowing you to combine time by the sea with a walk through the coastal vegetation. The park is therefore interesting not only because of its beach, but also because of the transitions between dunes, forest and Mediterranean macchia. At La Conchiglia beach, fine sand awaits you, and the seabed slopes gently there. This specific beach characteristic shapes the character of this stretch of coast and complements the natural surroundings of the Parco Costiero di Rimigliano with another clearly distinct beach area. The Passeggiata del Marinaio offers a different perspective on San Vincenzo. It begins in the town center and leads for just under a kilometer along the harbor breakwater to the large Il Marinaio statue. The promenade opened in 2010 and was upgraded in 2016 with new paving, lighting, fish decorations and artistic mosaics. At the end stands the seven-meter-high bronze work of art Il Marinaio by Giampaolo Talani. In this way, the route combines harbor atmosphere, art and a manageable walk along the water.

Towers, Churches and Frescoes

The Torre di San Vincenzo is part of the town’s history. It was built in 1304 by Jacopo da Peccioli and Londo Eroli on behalf of the Republic of Pisa. The tower is also connected with the battle between Pisa and Florence on August 5, 1505. A visit to the structure therefore leads not only to a single historic building, but also to an event from the history of the two Tuscan cities. The Church of San Vincenzo Ferreri is located in the town center and is the oldest of San Vincenzo’s three churches. Inside is a twelve-part fresco cycle by the painter and sculptor Giampaolo Talani. Created between 1979 and 1989, the frescoes cover 200 square meters and depict episodes from the life of Christ as well as the Evangelists. Together with Il Marinaio, they introduce you to two different works by Talani: a large-scale fresco cycle in a church and a seven-meter-high bronze work of art at the end of the harbor breakwater.
