Castagneto Carducci

Castagneto Carducci combines historic townscapes, the literary legacy of Giosuè Carducci, the wine landscape of the Bolgherese and the protected Padule di Bolgheri wetland. This creates a diverse Tuscan setting for planning your trip: you can combine culture in the town centre, regional cuisine, wine and nature during a single stay, without any one theme defining the character of the town.

Historic centre and Carducci’s literary world

The historic centre of Castagneto Carducci developed around the Castello dei Della Gherardesca, which was built around the year 1000. Cobbled lanes and natural terraces overlooking the sea and the surrounding landscape shape the walk. Gardens and access paths lie along the walls of the Castello della Gherardesca. The Chiesa di S. Lorenzo is listed in Castagneto Carducci as part of the Castello dei conti Della Gherardesca. In the Santissimo Crocifisso church in the Borgo, a famous 15th-century wooden crucifix recalls the town’s religious art history. Smaller cultural sites also give the centre its own character. The Teatro Roma was built in 1846 as the focal point of local cultural life. The Piazzetta della Gogna is a typical square in the historic centre; its name recalls the former public exposure of citizens at this location. Concerts and cultural events are held there today. The Museo di Arte Sacra di Castagneto Carducci is located in the Chiesa della Madonna Del Carmine. The Museo Archivio Giosuè Carducci displays books and magazines containing editions of Carducci’s works, photographs of people and places from his circle, and drafts of poems connected with the region. The exhibition panels trace important stages of his literary work, which was closely connected with the scents, sounds and landscapes of the Maremma pisana. Giosuè Carducci spent part of his childhood in Castagneto and Bolgheri. The museum entrance is at street level and is also accessible to people with disabilities.

Wetland, cypress avenue and paths through the landscape

The Padule di Bolgheri wildlife refuge was established in 1968, covers 500 hectares and lies on the northern boundary of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Grosseto–Livorno railway line. The Padule di Bolgheri is a Special Protection Area and a bird sanctuary with the Natura 2000 code IT5160004; since 1977, it has also been a Ramsar wetland of international importance. Walkable embankments lead to observation hides within the municipality, from which wildlife can be observed without disturbing it. Another landscape experience is offered by the Viale dei Cipressi di Bolgheri: the five-kilometre-long, tree-lined road connects the Oratorio di San Guido with the historic centre of the Borgo Bolgheri. It can be travelled by car along its entire length, and parking is available at both ends. For hiking enthusiasts, in the context of the municipality of San Vincenzo, a path joins the paths numbered 3 and 4 of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci after approximately 300 metres and leads to the access point for the integrated paths of the municipalities of San Vincenzo, Castagneto C.cci, Sassetta and Campiglia M.ma.
