Bolgheri – Culture, Wine and Landscape in Tuscany

Viale dei Cipressi and Historical Traces

Viale dei Cipressi di Bolgheri is a five-kilometre tree-lined road. It connects the Oratorio di San Guido with the historic centre of Bolgheri. The avenue can be driven along its entire length, and parking is available at both ends. This makes the famous route interesting even for visitors who wish to travel by car between the two points mentioned. The town’s historical character also includes Castello di Bolgheri, whose origins date back to the 13th century. The town is also linked to literary history: Giosuè Carducci spent part of his childhood in Bolgheri. Another important landmark is the Belvedere di Bolgheri. From there, you can enjoy views of the sea and the landscape.

Wine Landscape and Regional Identity

Grape varieties of Bordeaux origin are grown in the Bolgheri area, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The production area of the Bolgheri DOC corresponds to the administrative boundaries of the municipality of Castagneto Carducci in the province of Livorno. The coastal strip west of Via Aurelia is excluded. This precise delimitation is part of the regional wine landscape and makes clear that the designation is tied to a specific area. Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC also has its own development: in 2013, it became an independent Denominazione. Nature Observation and a Cycling Tour

Padule di Bolgheri offers a distinctive natural attraction. The area is crossed by walkable embankments leading to observation huts. There is also an observation tower at the start of the trail. This facility focuses visits on observing the landscape and walking along the embankments. For a longer bike ride, there is the “Tra Castagneto Carducci e Bolgheri” route. It is a 44-kilometre circular route for gravel and mountain bikes. Alongside the historic streetscape and wine, this provides a clearly designated opportunity for a more active exploration.

The IAT Bolgheri provides information on local sights, transport, food and wine routes, as well as artistic, cultural, sporting and leisure activities. In September, Bolgheri becomes the stage for Bolgheri Jazz. The event combines jazz and wine with the area’s most important wineries and numerous jazz bands from all over Italy.
