Bibbona – Village, Coast and Mediterranean Macchia

Bibbona combines a medieval town centre with coastal landscapes, protected natural areas and regional culinary experiences. Medieval Village and History

Il Borgo forms the historic heart of Bibbona. Narrow, cobbled alleyways and exposed-brick houses give the town centre its medieval character. The Pieve di Sant'Ilario already existed in the castle area in 1154. This means that in the town centre you will encounter not only characteristic architectural forms, but also a religious connection dating back to the Middle Ages. Another testimony to the area's local and coastal history is Forte Cavalleggeri. The complex was built in 1780 as a coastal defence structure and helped protect the coast of Marina di Bibbona from incursions by Saracens and pirates. The Mulino del Cardellino also represents the area's older working and landscape history. The old windmill stands on a hill, was in operation until the beginning of the 20th century and was restored in 1967.

Macchia, Pine Forest and Coast

Macchia della Magona belongs to Tuscany's regional agricultural and forestry holdings and covers approximately 1,636 hectares. It is also a habitat for wild boar, roe deer, fallow deer and foxes; migratory birds also stop there. Those who give greater priority to nature and landscape than to the historic town centre when choosing their holiday focus will find a distinctly different theme here from the alleyways of Il Borgo. The coastal landscape includes the wide beaches of Spiaggia di Marina di Bibbona, with fine sand, typical tomboli covered in Mediterranean macchia and characteristic coastal dunes. Pineta di Marina is part of the Riserva Naturale Tomboli di Cecina nature reserve. A specific access route is also described for orientation: From the SS1 Aurelia, take the La California exit towards Marina di Bibbona; then follow the signs to Via dei Cavalleggeri Nord as far as the Camping Free Beach.

Regional Products and Special Visits

Near the village, olive mills are recommended as places where you can try bruschetta with local extra virgin olive oil. Bibbona also has a point of sale for products from the region, offered as produce from a short supply chain. These two recommendations complement the historical and landscape impressions with a regional culinary aspect. The Grotte Gialle is the destination of guided tours in Bibbona. This distinguishes the experience from independently viewing the town centre or landscape: the visit is described as a guided tour.
