Camaiore between history, coast and pilgrimage route

Camaiore brings together different sides of Tuscany within a compact thematic area: you can discover archaeological evidence and medieval religious buildings, follow the Via Francigena through the town centre and reach Lido di Camaiore, a seaside resort. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore important to consider whether you want to focus on culture, historic atmosphere, a hiking stage or relaxing days at the beach.

Museums and historic sites

The Civico Museo Archeologico presents archaeological evidence from the area in 13 rooms, covering the period from prehistory to the Renaissance. The tour is designed to be educational and interactive, making it a focused introduction to the area’s long history. Free audio guides are available in Italian and English. The museum is accessible to visitors with mobility impairments; access for people with sensory or cognitive disabilities is possible by prior reservation. The history of Camaiore can also be seen in individual buildings outside the museum. Porta Lombricese is the only surviving gate of the town walls. One of its façades features an 18th-century image of the Virgin Mary. The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta preserves a marble baptismal font from the 14th century. The Museo d’Arte Sacra di Camaiore displays paintings, sacred goldsmithery, furnishings and liturgical vestments from the 14th to the 16th century. The Teatro dell’Olivo tells an unusual story of conversion: it was created by converting a wool-processing facility built in 1565, transformed into a theatre in 1649 and finally reopened in 2003. The Badia di San Pietro was founded by Benedictine monks in the 7th century. Its 17th-century organ is the centrepiece of the Festival Organistico Internazionale Città di Camaiore, held every summer.

Coast, route and landscape

If you would like to combine culture with a stage on a historic long-distance route, the Via Francigena passes through the centre of Camaiore. Stage 26 leads here from Massa, while Stage 27 continues to Lucca. This clear sequence of routes makes Camaiore a place where a stay can be combined with a specific route choice without focusing the trip exclusively on art visits. For days by the sea, Lido di Camaiore has more than four kilometres of fine sandy beach; it has been a seaside resort since the beginning of the 20th century. This creates a clear contrast with the museums, churches and historic buildings of Camaiore: you can make your trip primarily cultural or plan the coastal area as a focus in its own right. The landscape inland is also part of the character of the area. Grotta all’Onda is a prehistoric karst cave in the village of Casoli near Camaiore. It can be reached via a CAI trail through the oak forests of Monte Matanna. The Corpus Domini procession takes place in Camaiore in June. During the procession, sawdust carpets made by artisans, known in the Camaiorese dialect as “pula”, decorate the historic centre; they reach a length of up to 40 metres.
