Santa Lucia is a small village in the municipality of Camaiore, where paths bring the landscape and history into focus. The Sentiero dell’Acquarella leads from Villa Cavanis in Capezzano to the church square in Santa Lucia. The 3.9-kilometre route passes through nature and olive groves before reaching the village. Along the way, views open up across the entire Versilia coast; on clear days, islands in the Tuscan Archipelago can also be seen. If you are looking for accommodation in Santa Lucia, walking routes and scenery may be important considerations when planning your trip.

Walking routes with different features

Another option is the circular walk from Capezzano to Santa Lucia. It is part of the Camaiore Antiqua project, which comprises 15 circular routes in total. The route starts at the cemetery and climbs steeply to the village; it then follows the municipal mule track to the Canova washhouse. The steep approach and the mule track that follows shape the route, while the washhouse provides a historic landmark at its destination.

The Santa Lucia–Canova–Villa Cavanis route is one of the hill paths between Camaiore town centre and the Capezzano plain. It is described as a historic route with scenic and panoramic features. The route includes the old “di Cànova” washhouse, mentioned in a document from 1018. Canova is a washhouse of historical value; washhouses were essential structures in pre-industrial times. This route therefore links its landscape with an aspect of everyday life in the past.

An older route brochure describes the “Traversata delle Frazioni Camaioresi” from Santa Lucia on the slopes of Monte Gabberi to Fibbiano Montanino. Its destination sets it apart from the routes between Santa Lucia and Capezzano. Before setting out, check the current trail conditions and waymarking on site.

Historic traces in the village

The name of the borgo also points to its history: in the 13th century, Santa Lucia was mentioned as “Vegghiatoia or Vegliatoia”. During the episcopal visitation of 1465 to 1467, Santa Lucia a Vegghiatoia was listed among the churches of the Pieve di Santa Felicita. The older name and its ecclesiastical classification in the 15th century thus stand as distinct historical points of reference.

Choosing and planning your route

When comparing the routes, there are clear differences to consider: the Acquarella is 3.9 kilometres long and leads to the church square with views across Versilia; the circular walk from Capezzano is defined by its steep climb and the mule track to the washhouse. On clear days, islands in the Tuscan Archipelago can also be seen from the Acquarella. Before planning a walk, check the current trail conditions on site.
