Castle and Via Francigena

The remains of Montemagno Castle are visible on a hill above the village. Among the surviving features are sections of the curtain wall and the façade of the church dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. The medieval castle served both as a residence for the ruling lord and as a refuge during sieges. Its location was strategic: it stood above the Via Francigena, which connected the Versilia plain with Lucca.

This connection makes the castle not only a historic site within the village, but also links Montemagno to a route of regional importance.

Trails around Montemagno

Montemagno can also be explored via specific trail sections away from the castle. The climb to Montemagno along the Via Francigena leads to an almost thousand-year-old holm oak. Another section of the Via Francigena begins at the Leccio di Montemagno and runs along the northern side of the Church of San Michele di Montemagno.

For a longer loop, the Pontemazzori–Montemagno–Pontemazzori circular route, Anello di Camaiore Antiqua, is documented. It includes an almost flat forest section of approximately 2.5 kilometres to Località alla Trina above Montemagno. The approximately 2.5 kilometres refer to the forest section, not to the length of the entire Anello di Camaiore Antiqua. Leccio di Montemagno: Natural Monument and Remembrance

The centuries-old Leccio di Montemagno holm oak was considered Giorgio Gaber’s favourite tree. The tree fell after storms in November 2019. Its significance for the village did not end completely there: saplings of the Leccio di Montemagno were planted with the involvement of local schools in memory of the tree. The site thus represents a specific natural feature, a well-known personal association and a local form of remembrance at the same time.

Woodcarving Symposium and Open-Air Museum

Another cultural highlight is the woodcarving symposium in Montemagno, which was held for the fifth consecutive time. For the Montemagno edition, twelve chainsaw-carving masters were expected on Saturday, 9 May, and Sunday, 10 May, to create new wooden statues. The wooden sculptures created as part of the symposium were to remain in Montemagno as part of an open-air museum. In this way, the event complements the village’s medieval traces with a contemporary, craft-oriented art form.
