Pontemazzori on Historic Routes

Pontemazzori brings together several clearly distinguishable historical route connections with small religious buildings and churches. Particularly characteristic is the section of the Via Francigena on the valley floor of the Lucese River. Branch routes connect Montemagno with the Seimiglia. This creates a place where the history of the pilgrim route is reflected not only in a single building, but also in the traditional connections running through the landscape.

Via Francigena and the Routes to Montemagno and Lucca

The official Via Francigena leads from Pontemazzori towards Montemagno via the Via Vecchia. Along the way, it passes Villa Trenta, now known as Giannini. This section can be compared with another historical route connection: a second route starting from Pontemazzori follows the via di Biseste. It was used as the main road to Lucca until the 1920s. The two names therefore represent different historical directions and uses, which you can distinguish when exploring Pontemazzori.

Small Route Markers and Religious Sites

Along the section near Pontemazzori, you will find Marginette, also known as Maestà. These small votive structures served both as places of worship and as shelters for pilgrims. They are complemented by croci delle missioni, or memorial crosses commemorating important religious events of the past. Such route markers give the historical course a finely detailed, location-specific dimension: alongside the larger churches, the small stations along the route are also part of Pontemazzori’s cultural character.

Another notable point is the Chiesetta del Volto Santo. It is located along the Via Francigena at the beginning of the ascent to the Montemagno Pass. In the small church, you can see a damaged painted image of the crucifix venerated in Lucca Cathedral. For a culturally oriented visit, this connection is particularly noteworthy because it links Pontemazzori with Lucca’s religious heritage without requiring a large museum building.

Chiesa di Sant’Andrea and the Circular Route

The Chiesa di Sant'Andrea was first mentioned as early as 885 and was completely rebuilt around the middle of the 19th century. This church marks the start of the circular route “Pontemazzori - Montemagno -Pontemazzori, Anello di Camaiore Antiqua”. Its route follows the ancient via di S. Lorenzo uphill. The named circular route therefore offers its own way to explore Pontemazzori: the starting point is a historically documented church site, after which the old route towards Montemagno takes centre stage.

For local orientation, a specific traffic notice is also part of the picture of the area. Traffic on the via della Fornace near Costacce in Pontemazzori was closed because of the deterioration of the bridge over the Fosso del Mulinetto. When comparing the various routes and historical sites, you should consider this notice separately from the pilgrim and circular-route itineraries described above.
