Pedona lies in the hills above Camaiore at an elevation of 309 metres. From here, the view stretches across the Versilia plain to the sea; on clear days, the horizon extends from Livorno to La Spezia. The historic village layout and its named trails give the place a distinctive character, combining cultural history and landscape.

A Village with a Castle History

Pedona’s ring-shaped layout dates back to the 11th-century castle of the Nobili Flammi. It had a round tower and massive walls. Between the 11th and 12th centuries, Pedona was also part of a ring of castles that protected Camaiore. The village’s history therefore includes both the castle, which shaped its ring-shaped layout, and Pedona’s role in the defensive ring around Camaiore.

Traces of the former walls and some original buildings can be seen in front of the village church. The history of the church dedicated to Saint Maurizio also reflects its connection to the castle: it was originally located within the castle complex and was later rebuilt outside the walls. San Maurizio is classified as a subsidiary or filial chapel and as architectural heritage.

Two dates help distinguish the building history of San Iacopo: Pedona’s original church was built in the 13th century; San Iacopo took on its present form between 1923 and 1924. Thus, medieval origins and a much later building phase stand side by side in Pedona.

Historic Trails around Camaiore

The trails also offer different ways to explore the area. The Monte Moneta–Capanne trail is an old mule track with panoramic views. The “Scesa” descends from the cemetery in Pedona to Camaiore. Route 10 Camaiore–Pedona–Camaiore is part of the Camaiore Antiqua project, which aims to restore historic trails. The mule track is notable for its character as an old panoramic route; the Scesa has a named starting point and destination, while Route 10 is linked to the restoration project.

FrancigenAmica is a recurring outdoor event organised by SEI Versilia ASD and the Municipality of Camaiore. The programme also includes trails from Camaiore Antiqua; the specific routes may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates and programme for the relevant year. Before setting out on a hike, it is also worth checking the current conditions of your chosen trail.

Local Food Culture and Travel Planning

Scoppolato di Pedona is considered a local cheese speciality and a symbol of the village’s cheese-making tradition. A post from June 2022 also mentioned the restaurant Il Soggiorno in Pedona and described its handmade-pasta Tordelli. If you plan to eat there, check in advance whether it is currently open.

When looking for a hotel in Pedona, the different facets of the village can help you shape your travel plans: the ring-shaped village layout and churches for an interest in cultural history, the named trails for outdoor activities, or Scoppolato as a taste of local food culture. This makes it easier to tailor your stay to the aspect that interests you most.
