Greppolungo among Castle Remains and the Apuan Alps

Greppolungo lies northwest of Camaiore on a rocky outcrop just over 330 metres above sea level. From here, there are wide views over the Camaiore Valley, which lies between the peaks of the Apuan Alps and the coast. The village therefore combines a clearly defined high-altitude setting with historical traces and several documented routes suited to different interests. Historical Traces around the Village

Greppolungo Castle is first mentioned in 1219 in a deed of joint ownership between the nobles of Corvaia and Vallecchia. The partially buried remains lie about 150 metres south of the village in an area cultivated with olive trees. Two fragments of wall survive, with a maximum length of five metres. Their dimensions and location make this historical site a clearly defined point of interest within the village’s history, without allowing any conclusion to be drawn about its current accessibility.

Greppolungo is also connected with religious history. The original collection of the Museo d’Arte Sacra di Camaiore included sacred objects from S. Giuseppe a Greppolungo. In the village itself stands a church with a detached bell tower opposite it. A tour of Greppolungo therefore includes several distinct historical points of reference: the castle mentioned above, the ecclesiastical collection, and the visible ensemble of church and bell tower.

Hiking Trails to La Culla and the Roccia dei Pennati

An important starting point for active days is the Greppolungo–La Culla–Roccia dei Pennati circular hike. It is part of the “Camaiore Antiqua” project, which includes 15 circular trekking routes. The specific route begins at the Greppolungo car park, follows the Sentiero del Castellaccio to La Culla, and then returns towards Greppolungo via Sentiero 107 and the Sentiero di Soppenna.

You can reach the Roccia dei Pennati from Greppolungo via CAI Trail 106 towards Monte Gabberi after approximately 45 to 60 minutes. The Greppolungo rock carvings are located at the Roccia dei Pennati. They comprise 15 markings, including 12 pennati, a hammer, a cup-mark depression and a rectangular basin.
