Massa: Castle, History and Coastal Views

Castello Malaspina di Massa already existed around the year 1000 and was rebuilt and extended several times over the centuries. Its hill consists of rocky Mesozoic limestone. In the hills above the coastal plain, compact, layered Mesozoic limestone massifs emerge between differently coloured Triassic shale soils. Mediterranean maquis developed on the limestone massifs, dominated by holm oak. Palace, theatre, collection and air-raid shelter

The history of Massa can be seen in several different places. Palazzo Ducale was built in 1547 on the ground plan of a villa owned by the Malaspina family and acquired its present form in the 17th century. Teatro Guglielmi opened on 25 April 1886 with a performance of Gaetano Donizetti’s opera Maria di Rohan; the opera was on the programme for twelve consecutive evenings. A more recent chapter in the history of the art collection is associated with Museo Gigi Guadagnucci. Its collection originated with the donation to the city of Massa in 2012 of an extensive group of works by the artist and his wife. The Rifugio antiaereo della Martana offers a completely different historical perspective. It is the largest air-raid shelter built in Massa, was constructed between 1942 and 1943 in approximately one year, and could accommodate thousands of people. From Massa’s historic centre, a panoramic path leads to the castle via old stairways and narrow streets. The route therefore represents a historic connection between places in its own right, independently of the castle’s current closure. For a quieter experience of the landscape, Parco della Rinchiostra offers shaded paths and centuries-old trees. A fixed date on the calendar is the Festa di San Francesco d’Assisi, Massa’s patronal festival.
