Forno: Hiking Trails, Bridges and Industrial History

Forno combines scenic trails in the Apuan Alps with distinctive traces of the town’s history. Routes around the town lead to summit meadows, springs and mountain passes; at the same time, an old stone bridge, a small church and a former silk mill tell of different chapters in the area’s development. Trails to Mountain Passes, Forests and Viewpoints

The hiking trail from Forno to Passo della Focolaccia through the Valle degli Alberghi is one of the trails slated for preservation. Another route leads from Forno through a chestnut forest, past the Freddana spring, and then through a pine forest to Pizzo della Bandiera and the summit meadows of Castagnolo. These summit meadows lie at an elevation of 1,075 metres and are considered among the most beautiful viewpoints in the Apuan Alps. The CAI Trail 154 is also clearly associated with Forno: it connects Forno and Casania. This means that different types of trails can be found side by side: a route to a mountain pass, a forest trail through several types of landscape, a connection between two towns and a short path to a spring.

Water as Part of the Landscape

The Frigido spring characterises Forno not only as the destination of a trail. During high water, the volume of water emerging from the overflow of the Frigido spring forms a spectacular waterfall. The waterfall is therefore explicitly linked to high water and is not a general feature of every visit.

Bridge, Church and Industrial History

Ponte dell’Indugio is an old stone bridge in Forno with a preserved stone arch. In the Massa area, it is considered the best-preserved of the old bridges. You can reach Ponte dell’Indugio from Massa via Via Bassa Tambura; the bridge is located at the beginning of Forno, near Via del Commercio. This precise location makes it a clearly identifiable landmark at the entrance to the town. S. Pietro in Forno is a small single-nave church with a side bell tower. Decorated marble blocks from the former medieval church have been preserved in the bell tower. The church is therefore notable not only for its simple architectural form, but also for preserving visible structural elements of the former medieval place of worship. The Filanda di Forno in Forno di Massa is an important example of industrial archaeology. A short, easy path to the Frigido spring leads from its old building. In this way, industrial history and the experience of the landscape meet directly in the description of the town.
