Altagnana

On a panoramic terrace in a dominant position above the village stands the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata. Together with its location on a ridge in the left-hand part of the Frigido Valley, it gives Altagnana a clear, distinctive character. Village history among alleyways and crafts

Santa Maria Annunziata was built at the end of the 15th century. Another historical landmark is the Porta di Berticagnana, built in the 14th century to defend the southeastern side of the settlement. As early as the 13th century, Altagnana was a small fortified village known as Berticagnana. Along the narrow alleyways, numerous marble Marginette bear witness to popular religious faith. The former working world has also been preserved in tangible traces: in Altagnana there are the remains of an oil press with a screw mechanism, numerous ovens, a handloom and several covered, loggia-like passageways associated with craft and agricultural work. The Monumento al Partigiano, located in the small square beside the provincial road in Altagnana, was created in 2005 by the sculptor Brunello Pucci. Local history also includes the traditional preparation of lardo. Several marble troughs used to make lardo have been preserved as material evidence of this earlier tradition and are being reused in various ways. In this way, the history of the village is connected not only with buildings, but also with craft processes and a traditional food culture.

Views and orientation in the landscape

From Altagnana, the view extends from the inner valley to the Ligurian coast. Visible points of reference include the islands of Tino and Tinetto, as well as the distinctive silhouette of Punta Bianca. This view adds a much broader perspective to the historical tour: the village is not isolated in the mountains, but opens up views all the way to the coast. From Massa, you can reach Altagnana via Via dei Colli towards S. Carlo Terme and then via Pariana. Provincial Road 55 is also important for orientation in the area. It leads from Altagnana to Monte Pasquilio and continues south to Monte Folgorito, which is 911 m high. This makes it possible to combine village history and an experience of the landscape in the same area without confusing the different starting points.

Trails on Monte Pasquilio

Pasquilio can be reached from Altagnana by car in just a few minutes. CAI Trail 140 begins there, with a moderate ascent through chestnut woods. The classic white-and-red markings of the Club Alpino Italiano, or CAI for short, mark the trail. For a hike with an easy-to-follow route, this description is an important distinction from a mere scenic drive. CAI Trail 33 leads from Pasquilio to Arni and is suitable only for experienced hikers.
