Cardoso

Cardoso combines a distinctive mountain landscape with trails, sanctuaries and a remarkable local cultural history. The Cardoso basin is dominated by chestnut forest, consisting mainly of relatively pure stands. This creates a destination where hiking experiences, views and historical evidence follow closely one after another, without reducing the area to just a single theme.

Hiking Trails with Views of the Apuan Alps

A specific starting point is located directly in Cardoso: the hiking trail to the site of the Trogna rock carvings and the Santuario di San Leonardo begins here. From the turnoff to the sanctuary, it takes about 15 minutes to reach the rock-carving site. From Trogna, the trail continues to Orzale and returns to the starting point as a circular route. The Cardoso–Orzale–San Leonardo circular route offers views of Monte Forato and Monte Procinto. The Santuario di San Leonardo is owned by the Cardoso community; the Madonna di San Leonardo is venerated there. The sanctuary enjoys a panoramic location overlooking the group of Nona, Procinto and Matanna, as well as Pania della Croce. Those considering another access point to the mountain trails will find a road in Casalina leading to the starting points of the trails to Monte Forato and the Santuario di San Leonardo. The Cardoso Casalina–Monte Forato circular route also offers views of the Foro and the Panie; from Casa Puccio, the view extends to Procinto and Nona. Further documented trail connections complete this picture: the Sentiero della Castagna leads from Pruno to the hamlet of L'Orzale and joins Sentiero 117 shortly below the hamlet. In addition, a hike documented by the Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane on July 13, 2020, led from Cardoso to the Cascata dell'Acqua Pendente, continued to Pruno and returned to Cardoso. Bridges, Stone and Commemorative Culture

The villages themselves also offer distinctive points of interest. In Pontaccio in Cardoso, there is a bridge dating from the second half of the 14th century. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cardoso dates from the 18th century. The municipality of Stazzema also contains a deposit of Pietra del Cardoso in the Apuan Alps. This deposit extends across the hamlets of Pruno, Cardoso, Stazzema, Mulina and Pomezzana. Casa Colleoni is an old alpine pasture building in Cardoso, already mentioned in the 18th century. It houses the ethnographic museum “Museo dell'Alpeggio e dell'identità apuana”. Casa Colleoni welcomes small groups for cultural, hiking-related and gastronomic tourism, as well as to promote local products. A graphic art exhibition entitled “Fra le rossastre nubi – stormi di uccelli neri… L’ambiente contadino versiliese di fine ’800 nella grafica di Filadelfo Simi” was also opened at the Palazzo della Cultura in Cardoso. The exhibition comprised around fifty graphic works by the artist Filadelfo Simi. A mill is also part of the area's historical working life. After the course of the river was diverted, it was converted to electric operation; it was fully functional and ground chestnuts and corn. In this way, alongside its trails and views, the landscape also retains a tangible connection to the former processing of local products.

Festivals and Local Traditions

The annual cycle is shaped by several traditional events. The Festa delle Rose takes place on the first Sunday after Pentecost. The festival in honor of San Leonardo is celebrated on Whit Sunday or the following Sunday. The game of bocce takes place on Easter morning. In January, the event “Epifania del Pennato” reenacts ancient rites of the Liguri Apuani and provides explanations of discoveries of rock carvings in the Apuan Alps.
