Culture, Festivals and Landscapes Around Pieve Fosciana

Pieve Fosciana combines historical sites, festive traditions, distinctive bodies of water and an important long-distance hiking trail. This makes it possible to discover the area in different ways: through culture and archaeology, regional events, or walks, nature observation and longer hiking stages.

Historic Sites and Archaeological Discoveries

A notable cultural landmark is the Eremo di Capraia, which was completely renovated at the initiative of the local population and municipal administration. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista is also part of the area's history: it was built around the 11th century in the Romanesque style. The Church of San Magno is likewise one of the monuments of Pieve Fosciana worth visiting.

The MuGar – Archaeological Museum of the Garfagnana – houses archaeological artefacts discovered in the Garfagnana. Among the remarkable pieces is a bronze breastplate from Cima la Foce dating from the Late Bronze Age, around the 11th century BC. This object is considered almost unique in Italy. For families with different interests, the combination of architectural history and archaeology thus offers two clearly distinct cultural themes.

Sillico also adds to the historical picture. The village's castle tower dates from the 12th to 13th century. During Sillico's Renaissance festival, dedicated to the village's bandits, the two entrances to the village are closed by large gates. The festival therefore has a clearly recognisable historical theme and a distinctive form of staging.

Festivals with Fixed Dates

Several events make annual planning specific. The Festa dei pastori takes place every year on the last Sunday in July at Lame di Capraia. In Sillico, the “Divini & Sapori” festival is held every year on the first weekend of July. In Pieve Fosciana itself, the Festa del Formenton 8 file takes place every year on the Sunday before the beginning of August. The different dates therefore range from the first weekend of July to the period just before the start of August and can be deliberately combined with a suitable travel period.

Lakes and Long-Distance Hiking Trail

For quieter days, Lago di Pontecosi offers year-round opportunities for walking, fishing and birdwatching. Prà di Lama is the only lake of natural origin in the Garfagnana and is fed by underground springs. The two bodies of water are therefore clearly different: Lago di Pontecosi combines several year-round activities, while Prà di Lama is characterised by its natural origin and its supply from underground springs.

Those looking for a longer hiking route will find a particularly clearly defined trail in the Via Vandelli. The long-distance trail is approximately 150 kilometres long and runs in seven stages from Modena to Massa. It crosses the Garfagnana and leads to Pieve Fosciana, where it meets the Via Matildica del Volto Santo. The route thus combines a wide-ranging trail with a specific connection to the area.

Regional Traditions

Pieve Fosciana's traditional Tasting Walk takes place at the beginning of August and offers local specialities prepared according to centuries-old recipes. Another vibrant tradition is the Regoli family's mill, which is still in operation. Together with the Festa del Formenton 8 file and the events in July and August, this creates a regional character consisting not only of sights, but also of festivals, recipes and continuity in craftsmanship.
