Seravezza between marble and wooded mountains

Seravezza combines impressive landscapes with tangible traces of Tuscan history. The town lies between old marble quarries and wooded mountains. Behind Seravezza are disused marble quarries associated with Michelangelo and the production of many of his sculptures. At the same time, Seravezza is considered a natural gateway to the Parco delle Alpi Apuane from the Versilia side. Palazzo Mediceo and historic sites

A central starting point for exploring the town’s cultural history is the Palazzo Mediceo di Seravezza. It was built between 1561 and 1565 on the orders of Cosimo I de’ Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, as a temporary residence during his frequent visits to the marble quarries and silver mines. The building therefore stands as a direct symbol of the connection between power, raw materials and the distinctive landscape around Seravezza.

In the vicinity of Seravezza, the Pieve di San Martino was restored and expanded during Michelangelo’s stay from 1518 to 1521. In La Cappella, the Romanesque Pieve di San Martino stands on the western slope of Monte Cavallo, opposite the Bardiglio quarries and alongside Monte Altissimo. This precise location also makes a visit interesting for travellers who wish to combine sacred architecture with the area’s striking quarry landscapes.

Another historic site lies on Monte Folgorito. The monument at the Gothic Line stands at the foot of the summit in the municipality of Seravezza. Paths to Costa and Monte Folgorito

Seravezza can also be explored through specific routes. A path leading to the Costa quarries begins near the Palazzo Mediceo. In addition, a hiking trail leads from Seravezza to Monte Folgorito. These two details offer different perspectives on the surrounding area: One path begins at the historic complex and the quarries, while the other connects the town with the mountain and the sites located there.

Festivals, olive oil and local products

Events with strong local ties are also part of Seravezza’s character. The San Lorenzo patronal festival takes place on 9 and 10 August, with a traditional bonfire at the confluence of the Serra and Vezza streams. This particular venue directly connects the event with the town’s distinctive water landscape.

At Enolia, olive oil is at the centre of a large food village that brings the Medicean complex in Seravezza to life in April. The so-called Fiera del Nove also takes place during the first week of September. Stalls there offer tastings of local products. Getting to Seravezza
