Antisciana – Green Forests, Paths and Village Culture

Antisciana is considered a district of ancient origin in a scenic setting. Paths through green forests run around the village and the neighboring historic districts. If you would like to combine the Tuscan landscape with village culture, you will also find specific traces here of hiking events, regional traditions and local memory.

Paths through Forest and Landscape

A hike described at an event in 2019 is particularly illustrative: it led from the sports facility in Pontecosi along a mule track to the small Chiesina del Lago and the dam of the lake. It then continued approximately 3 km uphill to Antisciana. This approximate figure remains part of the route description and does not refer to the length of the entire hiking trail. Another hike organized by the Festival delle Frazioni led from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana along the Sentiero Ariosto to the foot of the Fortezza di Mont’Alfonso and then via Buggina in the direction of Antisciana. An old path was also newly marked on April 3. It was intended to enable families and tourists to reach Antisciana and then continue on to Gragnanella. A Jolette was also available at the event, allowing people who cannot use their legs to complete the same old path. The program “A SPASSO CON IL FURIOSO” included a hike in Antisciana on April 2. It was part of seven walks through the districts of the municipality of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana; along the routes, street theater performances based on Ariosto’s imaginary world took place. The two-day Scarpinata della Garfagnana passed through numerous districts of the municipality, including Antisciana, with stops along the way, and was intended to introduce participants to the traditions and gastronomic specialties of the villages.

Church, Memory and Local Cuisine

The parish church “Chiesa dei Santi Pietro, Prospero e Caterina” is located in the village. It is dedicated to Saints Pietro, Prospero and Caterina. A memorial plaque for the fallen from 1919 names Bacci Eugenio, Bertelli Andrea and Bacci Raffaello in its inscription as heroes of the war from May 1915 to November 1918. The plaque was installed by the people of Antisciana and connects the local history with an explicitly named remembrance of the war years. Local food culture also appears in the documented events. As part of the Antisciana stage of the 2022 Festival delle Frazioni, the local Circolo Anspi prepared a typical lunch. Events of this festival are documented for Antisciana in 2019 and 2022.
