Torre: Culture, Routes and Landscapes in the Media Valle del Serchio

Torre brings together several facets of the Tuscan surroundings, without requiring you to commit to a single holiday theme. The 8-km-long Tempagnano–Torre–San Graziano–Vetrianello–Loppeglia cycling route passes through Torre. An ancient mule track also connects the villages of Frantoio and Torre in the Tempagnano area. This provides travel planning with both a clearly named cycling route and a historic path between the villages.

Churches and Sacred Art

In nearby Tempagnano, the church of San Prospero stands at the foot of a medieval bell tower with battlements. It preserves paintings from the 17th century, a recently restored 15th-century silver processional cross and valuable sacred furnishings. The site thus combines a striking building with several different examples of sacred art. In Valdottavo, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul has a fabric dating from the late 11th or early 12th century. The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta in Diecimo features an interior with three naves separated by two-coloured pillars, as well as a baptismal font and an ambo pulpit. In Partigliano, the Church of Saints Giusto and Clemente preserves a late-medieval wooden Annunciation group. It is largely attributed to the unknown Maestro di Partigliano, who was active from the late 14th to the early 15th century.

Pass, Forest and Views

At San Graziano Pass, an old chapel dedicated to the Madonna della Neve stands amid chestnut and pine trees. The road leading through Tempagnano connects the Borgo a Mozzano area with Versilia via S. Graziano Pass. This connection is particularly significant for understanding the landscape: here, the pass appears not only as a geographical name but also as part of a road between the Borgo a Mozzano area and Versilia. The Romitorio di San Bartolomeo is a single-nave church with an apse in a centuries-old holm oak forest near the former Bargiglio fortress. The fortress was demolished in 1373; this historical status is part of the character of the site. From the Torre del Bargiglio, the 360-degree panorama extends from the peaks of the Apuan Alps across the Serchio Valley and the fortresses of the Garfagnana to the plain of Lucca.

Hiking, Cycling and Regional Traditions

The final two stages of the Via Matildica del Volto Santo in the Media Valle del Serchio area run from Barga to Borgo a Mozzano and from Borgo a Mozzano to Lucca. The municipality of Borgo a Mozzano also contains one of the few intact sections of the Tuscan Gothic Line. Mountain paths lead to preserved bunkers, tunnels and other wartime outposts. In the wider surroundings, historic routes, sacred sites and traces of the 20th century can therefore be considered as distinct points of interest. Regional cuisine is also part of the local landscape. Farina di Neccio DOP is made from chestnuts and represents the traditional crafts, flavours and rural traditions of this area. It complements the cultural and landscape impressions with a culinary connection closely associated with the chestnut.
