Camporgiano between the Serchio Valley and Historic Routes

Camporgiano lies on the right bank of the Serchio River in a very green valley between the mountain ranges of the Apuan Alps and the Apennines. In the surrounding area, rolling hills, dense chestnut forests, farmland, and wide meadows on terraced terrain shape the landscape.

If you are looking for routes, landscapes, and history for your trip, Camporgiano offers several clearly distinct themes. The historic routes pass through a landscape shaped at the same time by medieval traces, local traditions, and agricultural use. Spelt is also widely cultivated in Camporgiano, forming a specific part of the local agricultural profile.

Hiking along Historic Connections

Camporgiano lies on the Via del Volto Santo, one of the best-known branches of the Via Francigena and an alternative to the route established by Bishop Sigeric of Canterbury. The connection is therefore described not only as a route through the landscape, but also as an independent historic route within the well-known network of pilgrim paths.

The historic trade route Via Vandelli also passes through the Camporgiano area. Today, it is a major hiking trail approximately 150 kilometres long. Fortress, Walls, and Older Religious Buildings

Some sections of the medieval walls have been preserved at the Rocca degli Estensi in Camporgiano. These walls formed the oldest core of the fortification. This allows the historic site to be understood through visible structural remains, without reducing the complex to a fully preserved fortress.

The Civica raccolta di ceramiche rinascimentali, which commemorates the old Este fortress, is also part of the cultural orientation. In Al Poggio, in the municipality of Camporgiano, the church of San Biagio also stands; it is one of the oldest churches in the Garfagnana. Together, these sites represent different approaches to history: fortification, collection, and religious architecture.

Folklore between the Amphitheatre and the Town Streets

The Festival Internazionale del Folclore takes place every year during the final ten days of July in the municipal amphitheatre as well as in the streets and squares of Camporgiano. The festival includes performances featuring dances, folk songs, and theatrical presentations of rituals and distinctive features of folk tradition. The events are therefore not limited to a single venue, but also extend into the streets and squares.

The first edition of the Festival Internazionale del Folclore di Camporgiano took place in 1972; since 1978, the festival has been held annually. For understanding the local culture, this documents both the festival's long development and its connection with performances and public spaces.
