Villa Collemandina lies at the foot of the Pania di Corfino massif. Beech and coniferous forests give way at higher elevations to the summit meadows of the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park. The landscape thus combines forest and open highlands. There are also trails and walking routes, a botanical garden and several cultural sites. When looking for accommodation, you can consider whether you would prefer to spend your days outdoors, among plant life, or exploring local history.

Forest, elevation and plant life

The “Maria Ansaldi” Botanical Garden lies at an altitude of 1,370 metres in a clearing within a beech forest in the Parco Naturale dell’Orecchiella. Numerous short paths wind through different areas, showcasing various aspects of the plant life of the Apennines and Garfagnana. The garden offers a distinctive perspective on the landscape, focusing on plants and their different forms.

The Parco dell’Orecchiella also offers pleasant walks. Its forests are home to species including Apennine wolves, deer, mouflons and golden eagles. The walks and wildlife give nature lovers two different reasons to explore the park: its trails through the landscape and the species that live there.

Trails around Corfino and Pania di Corfino

From Corfino, the Pania di Corfino State Nature Reserve can be reached on foot via CAI trails Nos. 56 and 58. The “Airone 1” trail also leads from Corfino to the reserve, following a complete loop around the Pania massif and climbing to its main summit. So this is not just a route into the reserve, but also a circular hike with a summit ascent. If you are comparing hikes for your stay, this distinction between an access route and a circular trail is a useful point of reference.

The stream below the Villa Collemandina reservoir is a good spot for picnics and sport fishing. The lake itself was empty because of exceptional dam maintenance work. You should therefore consider the lake and stream as separate places when planning your visit.

Churches, marble and local traditions

In Corfino, the Santuario della Madonna del Perpetuo Soccorso houses a 16th-century panel depicting the Virgin Mary and Child. In Pianacci stands the 19th-century Madonna di Caravaggio church. Both places offer a glimpse of the area’s religious art and architectural history, but each highlights a different period.

Sassorosso also has a distinctive material identity: the village is associated with the quarrying of high-quality red marble known as “saxo rubeo”. Its characteristic colour can be seen in the landscape and on the buildings. Finds near Sassorosso also indicate human presence dating back to prehistoric times. Together, the marble and the finds bring both the village’s visible character and its long history into focus.

In Corfino, the gastronomic walk “Un passo nel passato” features traditional dishes from rural cuisine on Ferragosto. Dates and programmes may vary; check the specific details if you plan to include the walk during your trip.

Villa Collemandina brings these different themes together without requiring you to follow a set sightseeing itinerary. Choose the focus that suits your travel interests and use the places described as a starting point for further planning.
