Sassorosso – Medieval Settlement Structure and Mountain Landscape

Sassorosso combines a preserved medieval settlement structure with a striking mountain landscape. The red marble that forms the town’s geological foundation and was used as a building material for its structures shapes not only the surroundings but also the character of the village. Village History Around San Michele Arcangelo

The narrow lanes run along the mountain slopes around the church of San Michele Arcangelo. This structure makes Sassorosso particularly interesting for anyone who wants to get to know a place not only through individual buildings but also through its organically developed appearance. The medieval settlement structure has been preserved and can be explored as a distinct focus alongside the views of the landscape. On the hill above Sassorosso, the foundations of a castle tower have also been preserved. These foundations overlook the karst gorge on the Corfino stream. The site therefore connects the historical dimension of the village with a distinctly geological landscape: on one side is the former fortification, and on the other the gorge as a defining feature of the surroundings. Porta della Pania and the Apuan Alps

A Historic Path and a Unique Tradition

The Sentiero del gufo follows a path once used by shepherds. Another special feature is the nativity scene installation in Sassorosso. It is located near the village of Casina Rossa on the regional road to the Passo delle Radici in the municipality of Villa Collemandina. In 2021, the residents of Sassorosso decided to recreate a depiction of the Nativity in the village’s disused quarry.
