Stazzema between Valley Views and the Apuan Alps

Stazzema combines a distinctly mountainous landscape with historical traces, regional cuisine and various opportunities to explore the surroundings on foot. The town is strategically located with views over the entire Mulina Valley. At the same time, Stazzema is surrounded by the Apuan Alps, is the only entirely mountainous centre in this part of Tuscany and enjoys a panoramic position overlooking its numerous hamlets. When choosing your accommodation, therefore, it is not only the town itself that matters, but also whether you want to give particular importance to historical evidence, paths through the landscape or the cuisine of Alta Versilia.

Historical Traces in the Townscape

A central point of reference is the Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta. The first document concerning the parish church held in the archiepiscopal archive of Lucca is dated to 871. In 1255, the nobles of Versilia signed an alliance called the “Lega di Stazzema” in the parish church. Both dates represent the town’s longstanding historical importance, without requiring you to focus on any single era.

In the historic centre of Stazzema, the Torre dell’Orologio dates from 1739. Another trace leads to Stazzema’s historic silver-mining area: the Torre dell’Argentiera is one of the still-visible defensive structures in this area. Several metati in Stazzema are also associated with the tradition of drying chestnuts. Alongside representative buildings, you will therefore encounter evidence of local working and food history.

Cave, Circular Trails and Mountain Route

For a clearly structured activity, consider the tourist visit to the Antro del Corchia. It follows a route of approximately 2 kilometres along a steel walkway, is conducted in groups and lasts about two hours. The approximate length and fixed itinerary distinguish this experience from an ordinary hike and make it an independent activity during your stay.

In the surroundings of Stazzema, around Sant’Anna di Stazzema, the Sentieri di Pace form a network of six circular trails on historic mule tracks. The paths convey the history of the Sant’Anna massacre and the village. If you prefer a longer hike, a moderately difficult route leads from Stazzema, via a short detour to the Rifugio Forte dei Marmi, to the summit of Monte Matanna and back along the same route. This route is also suitable for families with children.

Dishes of Alta Versilia

In Stazzema, you can try dishes from the cuisine of Alta Versilia, including Tordelli versiliesi, ravioli seasoned with ragù, as well as desserts made with chestnut flour, such as Castagnaccio and Ciacci with ricotta. Ballotti are also mentioned: chestnuts cooked with fennel seeds. These dishes draw on ingredients and preparations that also correspond to the traces of chestnut drying visible in Stazzema.
