Sinalunga: Culture, Festivals and Chianina Tradition

Sinalunga combines historic sites, lively festivals and Tuscan cuisine with routes through vineyards, olive groves and cultivated fields. Culture and landscape come together here in different settings: underground passageways and terracotta architecture can be found in the town, while the Via Lauretana and the Percorso del Gigante Bianco run through the surrounding area.

Historic traces in the town

A prominent point of interest is the Palazzo Pretorio. Its façade and tower are made of the terracotta typical of Tuscany, giving the townscape a clearly recognisable regional character. The underground passageways of the Fonte del Castagno are equally unusual. They are more than 200 metres long and were completed in 1265.

Specific requirements apply to visits to these passageways. Appointments are organised by the Gruppo Archeologico Sinalunghese; groups of no more than 10 people are scheduled on Saturdays or Sundays. A written request must be sent at least one week in advance to ufficio.turistico@comune.sinalunga.si.it. The visit is therefore subject to weekend appointments, a limited group size and a prior request.

Festivals between tradition and the present

The Fiera alla Pieve shows a clear transformation in the event: in the past, it took place in the second week of October on the grounds next to the Pieve ad Mensulas church and was characterised by the sale of livestock, meat and goods. Today's Fiera alla Pieve preserves gastronomic traditions with porchetta, celery, croccante, as well as cheeses in various types and stages of maturity. Market stalls and an amusement park complement the current edition. The former focus on livestock, meat and goods therefore clearly differs from today's combination of regional food, market activity and entertainment.

L'Incantaborgo expands the event calendar with art and culinary offerings. The format includes craft markets, exhibitions, street food and special openings of particularly noteworthy sites in the historic centre. Every summer, L'Incantaborgo also offers a festival featuring mobile street theatre, acrobatics, juggling, dance, visual installations and musical performances. The various programme items thus combine crafts, exhibitions, food, historic sites and performances in the streets.

Routes through the landscape and Chianina culture

The Via Lauretana crosses the Sinalunga area. It begins in the hamlet of Scrofiano and leads through oak forests, cultivated fields, vineyards and olive groves. Along its route, forests, agricultural land, vineyards and olive cultivation alternate with one another.

Alongside Arezzo, Sinalunga is one of two recommended starting points for the Percorso del Gigante Bianco circular route. The Chianina cattle breed provides the thematic thread. Along the Percorso del Gigante Bianco, visitors can tour Chianina cattle farms and taste genuine IGP beef. The circular route therefore brings together landscape, Chianina cattle farming and the tasting of IGP beef under one thematic focus.
