The Sagra del Panigaccio takes place in Podenzana in August. In addition, a ceremony in honour of the Madonna della Neve, with a fair, is held every year on 5 August. Churches, sanctuary and historical traces

A prominent landmark is the Santuario della Madonna della Neve, also known as Santuario del Gaggio. The sanctuary dates back to the 17th century and is located on Monte Gaggio; at the same time, it overlooks the entire Magra Valley.

Montedivalli is home to the Pieve di Sant’Andrea, a Romanesque church. After careful restoration, it was reopened to the public in 2011. Its history can therefore be clearly incorporated into your cultural itinerary without tying your visit to a specific length of stay. Another historical trace leads to Genicciola: a necropolis of the Ligures Apuani was discovered there in the 19th century, dating from the 3rd to the 1st century BC. It comprised dozens of stone cist graves and numerous grave goods, including several ash urns.

The Castello di Podenzana is also part of the town’s recorded history: it was owned by the Malaspina family. Together with the Pieve, the sanctuary and the necropolis, this creates a cultural focus that brings together different periods and themes.

Scenic routes and peaceful days

Podenzana offers trekking opportunities through chestnut forests. Those who want to include exercise and landscapes in their stay can plan these routes as a separate day activity alongside the cultural themes. From the valley floor near the Pieve di Sant’Andrea in Montedivalli, a highly scenic road also leads to Genicciola. A church is also integrated into a network of mule tracks that originated from the ancient Via del Gottero, are now known as the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, and lie along the watershed between the Vara and Magra rivers. Another network of mule tracks led down into the valley to a ford across the Magra and Aulella rivers. These paths were used by pilgrims from Liguria travelling to Rome or, in the opposite direction, to Santiago de Compostela.
