Castello Aghinolfi and the history of the area

The octagonal tower of Castello Aghinolfi is at the heart of the historical experience. The documented history of the castle therefore stretches far back, while the exhibition focuses on its architectural development. In the restored Mastio, a permanent multimedia installation explains the castle's development phases using animated virtual reconstructions. Lago di Porta is a freshwater wetland close to the coast that survived the historical drainage works. The area is protected at European level and designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA). It is home to rare species of significance for nature conservation. Lago di Porta therefore represents not only a landscape, but also the preservation of a special habitat. The short circular route around the Lago di Porta oasis begins and ends in Cinquale. It follows the embankments of the Versilia River and the lake. The Documentation Centre on the Gothic Line located there houses documents, memorabilia and photographs concerning the events of the Second World War in the area of the Province of Massa-Carrara and Versilia. The offering in Cinquale di Montignoso is complemented by the Terme della Versilia, a wellness centre and thermal baths.

Local specialities from Montignoso

Traditional foods are also part of Montignoso's regional identity. Pane Marocco is made from cornmeal and olives; this preparation has been passed down for centuries.
