Marina di Carrara: Beach, Waterfront and Port

Marina di Carrara combines beach, port, promenade and a distinctive piece of marble culture. When choosing the right area to stay, the different beach options, the waterfront along the outer harbour and the connection to Carrara-Avenza railway station are particularly interesting. This means you can get to know the town not only as a coastal destination, but also through its maritime history and individual cultural sites.

Beach, free sections and waterfront

The beach at Marina di Carrara is wide and consists of fine sand. The shallow water slopes gently. The beach area includes four free beaches alongside equipped bathing establishments. Those who want to compare different types of beach experience will therefore find free sections and bathing establishments side by side. In the northern part of the beach, near the border with Liguria, there is also the dog-friendly Bau Beach. This area therefore clearly differs from the other beach sections through its explicit focus on visitors with dogs. A second point of orientation by the water is the Marina di Carrara Waterfront. It is a 1,200-metre-long promenade along the outer harbour area. The promenade offers views of the open sea and the Apuan Alps. As a result, two very different landscapes meet along this stretch of coast: the open horizon of the sea and the mountains inland. For walks by the water, the waterfront is also a clearly recognisable part of the harbour surroundings, although it should not be equated with a free beach or an equipped bathing establishment.

Port, pleasure boats and local history

The port of Marina di Carrara has a clearly dated history: its construction began in 1851. Immediately east of the shipyards, there is a mooring area for pleasure boats with several pontoons on sheet-pile walls. This mooring area is managed by the Club Nautico. The port therefore differs significantly from the wide sandy beach. The Church of the Holy Family on the central Piazza Menconi is also one of Marina di Carrara’s specific landmarks. At the entrance, it has a valuable choir loft made of white marble. It originally stood in Carrara Cathedral. This cultural site therefore combines a central square, sacred architecture and a marble detail that can be seen not only from outside but already at the entrance to the church.

Travel connections and a green townscape

For travel planning, Carrara-Avenza railway station on the Rome–Genoa railway line is an important reference point. It is connected to the port by local public transport. Those who include the port as part of their stay can therefore take the connection between the railway line, local public transport and the port into account when choosing where to stay, without assuming a specific journey time. The built-up area of Marina di Carrara is also interspersed with pine groves and parks. This means there are also clearly defined green spaces between the beach, port and built-up areas. Together with the waterfront, the shallow sandy beach, the marina and the church on Piazza Menconi, this creates a townscape in which maritime themes, the landscape and individual cultural sites stand closely alongside one another.
