Location between the Rosaro and the Apennines

Fivizzano lies on a hill 326 meters high on the left bank of the Rosaro stream. The town is located at the foot of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and near the Apuan Alps. The Strada Statale 63 del Cerreto is also important for understanding the area’s geography: it connects Fivizzano with Emilia and northern Italy. The town’s location therefore represents not just a single viewpoint, but the connection between several Tuscan and Emilian landscape regions.

Walls, squares, and architectural history

The walled historic center is dominated by Piazza Medicea and its monumental fountain. The Medici Walls were built around the middle of the 16th century. Today, the sections on the western side of the town and three gates are particularly visible: the Sarzanese Gate to the south, the Modenese Gate to the north, and the Lucchese Gate to the east. Those who wish to explore Fivizzano’s history on foot encounter not only individual buildings here, but also a recognizable sequence of fortifications, urban spaces, and square design. Gragnola, with the Castello dell’Aquila, is part of the municipality of Fivizzano. This is a 14th-century manor house that was completely restored after a long period of decline. Another important building is the Church of Saints Jacopo and Antonio. It was built in the 13th century at the request of the monks of Sant’Antonio di Vienne, became a parish church in 1378, and has been the Madonna di Reggio shrine, Beata Vergine dell’Adorazione, since 1946.

Museums and printing history

The Museo di San Giovanni displays valuable sacred furnishings and numerous art-historically significant works from the former Augustinian monastery, as well as from parish and other churches in the Fivizzano area. Alongside the town’s fortifications and squares, the area’s religious art history therefore also comes to the fore. At the Museo della Stampa in Palazzo Fantoni Bononi, you should take its current status into account: it is currently closed because the building has been unusable since the earthquake of June 2013. Nevertheless, two notable dates in printing history are associated with Fivizzano. In 1471, Jacopo da Fivizzano printed the first books there using movable type; in 1802, Agostino Fantoni developed an early prototype of a typewriter.

Municipal area, natural surroundings, and local cuisine

The Geo-Archeo-Adventure Park of the Equi Caves is located in Equi Terme within the municipality of Fivizzano, in the heart of the Apuan Alps Regional Park and in a UNESCO-recognized Global Geopark. This destination broadens the view from the historic town center to the municipality’s geological and landscape context. Local cuisine is also documented through a specific event. During the 2024 edition of Fivizzano Sapori, the historic center was brought to life for four days with a food market and stalls offering local dishes. Another distinctive point of reference is the pilgrims’ hostel in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, also known as Piazza Medicea, on Via del Volto Santo. It has 10 beds for pilgrims traveling to Lucca Cathedral, where an ancient wooden crucifix is kept.
