Mommio combines an impressive stream landscape with geological features, a historically significant village church and places of remembrance. If you are looking for a less prominent but thematically diverse place for your trip, you will find nature, art and history here in clearly recognisable themes. Mommio is particularly interesting if you do not want to experience culture and landscape separately.

Stream Landscape and Marmitte dei Giganti

The Mommio stream flows near the Agriturismo Restì. Its source lies at Cima Belfiore at an elevation of 1,810 metres. This means that the landscape around Mommio can be understood not only through the village, but also through the course of the water and its origin in the higher mountain area. The Marmitte dei Giganti are among the most striking natural formations. They are spherical forms created by river erosion, about one metre deep and approximately ten metres wide. They are of glacial origin and were carved into the rock by water and the abrasive action of gravel. Access to the Marmitte dei Giganti leads from the Agriturismo Restì at a bridge over the Mommio stream. This connects the geological feature with a specific starting point in the local landscape, without requiring it to be viewed separately from the rest of the stream landscape. The Agriturismo Restì also has a pond for sport trout fishing. This documented feature complements the natural experiences with a clearly defined activity. Another point of orientation is the information centre established by the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park at the Agriturismo Restì in Mommio, in the municipality of Fivizzano.

The Access Road to Mommio and the Agriturismo Restì

Beyond Fivizzano, a side road branches off towards Passo del Cerreto and leads to Mommio. If the Agriturismo Restì is one of your destinations, you first pass through the centre of Mommio and then continue for approximately 4.5 kilometres along an unpaved road to reach it. This specific route description is relevant to your choice of location: it shows that the Agriturismo Restì should not simply be equated with the village centre, but is reached via its own described access road. Chiesa di San Martino and Village History

The Chiesa di San Martino stands in the village centre and has a long history. It was first documented at the end of the 13th century as being subordinate to the Pieve di Vendaso. The church contains paintings by Luigi Battistini from Fivizzano. These include a lunette in the presbytery, a crescent-shaped pictorial field depicting Saint Martin handing his cloak to a poor man. For a tour of Mommio, the church therefore offers both a historical connection and a specific artistic motif. Mommio's more recent history is made visible through places of remembrance in the village. In May 1944, Mommio was the site of a Nazi-fascist massacre in which 22 people were killed. Among those killed in the events in the municipality of Fivizzano were six residents of Mommio; 70 of the village's 72 houses were mined or set on fire. A “Sentiero della Memoria” was created in the village centre, placing this chapter of the village's history within the public space. The Monumento ai caduti di Mommio stands in the middle of the village square at the end of Via Bompizzo.
